Hardcover. Condition: Fine. Dust Jacket Condition: Fine. 1st Edition. Steven Rhude; A Place Called Away Living and Painting in Nova Scotia; Introduction by Dee Appleby; Photography by Garry Woodcock; Design by Barbara Wentzel. Published by Steven Rhude, Lunenburg, N. S. Canada, 2010. First printing. Signed. From the blurb Widely regardedin Nova Scotia as a valued artist for the last twenty years, Steven Rhude has steadily pursued his vision of vernacular imagery with an imposing strategy. Set in unconventional situations, Steven Rhude employs familiar coastal icons such as the maritime dory and lighthouse, to elbow his way into the viewers mental space. Once there, these objects seem isolated by the long shadow of urbanism, suggesting casualties of coastal life. Although based on real places, Rhude considers the settings in his paintings as fictitious intended to evoke a cultural or political perspective. Aided by his use of realism and the modernist canon, Rhude's imagery can leave one wondering what the protagonist's strengths really are, and whether the object viewed has more than just utilitarian characteristics. Along with humour, a narrative is present in Rhude's work, and questions remain in the viewer's mind like the residue of a ghostly presence. Steven Rhude was born in Noranda, Quebec in 1959. He attended the Ontario College of Art and Design in Toronto followed by a year of Study in Florence. He moved to Nova Scotia in 1990, living first near Canso and he now lives in Lunenburg, N. S. This book has 80 colour plates. This large format book, 147 pages measuring 251mm X 275mm, is in fine condition in a fine dust jacket, that is now enclosed in a protective mylar wrap. A well-made uncommon book with high quality photographs. A delightful, whimsical journey around Nova Scotia, with things not quite where they really belong. Signed by Author(s).
