With black-and-white drawings throughout. At the age of thirteen, the author had written several volumes, one of them this book. Intended for young readers, this is a story of Victorian England; of Lucia and her friend Louisa; her governess, Miss Gray; the mysterious Mr. Hermit Crab, and the Wicked Fairy. Outer margins of cover cloth slightly discolored/sunned. Light-to-moderate rubbing and very light fraying to head of spine and upper front cover corner. Neat prior owner inscription and date at upper half-title page. Otherwise clean and tight except top page block as follows: Irregular old liquid brownstain at upper rear dust jacket panel and head of spine (jacket), with quarter-size spot of same at upper page block. About 3/4 of fore edge of dust jacket panel/front jacket flap has been nibbled away (rodent damage?) Irregular 1/2 " chip at lower spine of jacket; 1" closed tear at upper front panel. jacket lightly scuffed and soiled. Not as bad as it sounds!
