Taschenbuch. Condition: Neu. Neuware - Chaucer's Boece is a book that was published in 1886 and is a translation of Boethius' The Consolation of Philosophy. The book is a Middle English translation of the original Latin work and was completed by Geoffrey Chaucer in the late 14th century. The Consolation of Philosophy is a philos…ophical treatise that was written by Boethius while he was imprisoned and awaiting execution. In the book, Boethius explores the nature of happiness, the problem of evil, and the relationship between free will and divine providence. Chaucer's translation of the work is considered a masterpiece of Middle English literature and is notable for its poetic language and vivid imagery. The book has been praised for its ability to convey complex philosophical ideas in a way that is accessible and engaging to readers. Overall, Chaucer's Boece is a significant work of literature that continues to be studied and appreciated by scholars and readers alike.Englished From Anicii Manlii Severini Boetii Philosophiae Consolationis, Book 5. Add to basketSecond Graham edition; 12mo (17 x 10.5 cm); engraved frontispiece, woodcut initials, head and tailpieces, 5pp ads to rear, A12 cancellans, text-block toned with moderate spotting; contemporary panelled-calf, later contrasting red morocco lettering-piece to spine, joints carefully restored, small split to spine, very good; [3], v…i-xlv, [1], 273, [5 ads]pp. The second edition of this English-language translation of Boethius' Consolation of Philosophy by the Jacobite conspirator Richard Graham, 1st Viscount Preston (1648-1695). Arguably the most famous work of philosophy from late antiquity, Boethius composed his Consolation at the very end of his life whilst imprisoned and awaiting execution for treason in AD 523-4. It takes the form of a dialogue between the author and philosophy, personified as a 'Woman of a most reverend Countenance' (p.3), who counsels that true happiness is not based upon the attainment of material riches, honour or power, but from the unity of the soul and body within. The text goes on to discuss the problem of evil, the nature of predestination, free will, and justice. As translator, Boethius was an important link between the Hellenic and Medieval worlds and was amongst the most widely read and debated figures from late antiquity. Such is his legacy that he has been dubbed the 'last of the Roman philosophers and the first of the scholastic theologians' (Edward Kennard Rand). ESTC T21900.

Add to basket8vo, pp.xxxii, 246, [2, errata], with an engraved frontispiece; lightly toned at extremities but a very good copy; bound in contemporary panelled speckled calf; rebacked; old booklabel and stamps of Richmond Public Library, presented by T.J.Garstaing in 1943; modern bookplate of the Fox Pointe library of Howard Knohl.First editi…on of this translation by the diplomat, politician and Jacobite conspirator Richard Graham, 1st Viscount Preston (16481695). The translation had initially been completed in 1680; after the Glorious Revolution, Preston was arrested as a supporter of JamesII in exile, released, and then rearrested and sent to the Tower in January 1691 for high treason. His death sentence was dropped after he confessed and named his co-conspirators, including William Penn. Allowed to retire to Yorkshire, he spent the rest of his life revising his Boethius for the press, his own experience in prison informing his understanding of the work his Preface is full of buried allusions to his own experience.
