Add to basketHardcover. Condition: Good. First Edition. A perfectly serviceable reference copy; nothing fancy, but complete and sturdy. Bound in contemporary calf-leather over boards, stamped gilt borders to spine, gilt lettering of Tatler over burgundy label at spine, but half of each is chipped away. Bound in at frontis is a piece by Richard Steele, an item dedicated to William Lord Cowper, set in overlarge type-face, then begins with Tuesday, January 3rd, 1709 issue (#115). The interior is remarkably bright, with some scuffing along edges, tips, joints, else quite nice. The Tatler was a gentleman's art, culture, politics, newsy rag of sorts--current events rumor and gossip and humor in about equal measure. This appears to be an omnibus edition, with a publication date of 1764 at title page but reprising short pieces back to 1709-1710. Assembled by Richard Steele, editor, raconteur, and with pieces by and about him, Isaac Bickerstaff, and others, in the form of letters and obituaries, discourses upon manners, foods, wines, architecture and the like. It mimicked Addison and Steele's The Spectator, Samuel Johnson's The Rambler and The Idler, and Goldsmith's Citizen of the World. 318 pp. plus a complete index, letter by letter.Member, I.O.B.A., C.B.A., and adherent to the highest ethical standards.
