Johnson presents a fierce attack on Richard Bentley's translation of the Life of Horace, published from 1707-11. In his repsonse, Johnson identifies forty-six major errors and a further ninety passages which he deems are offensive to Horace's original. Richard Johnson (1656-1721) was a grammatician and Latin scholar. He was not alone in his dislatisfaction of Bentley's work, Alexander Cunningham was another outspoken critic. Bentley had consciously made numerous emendations to the original text, which to some were sacrilege and others merely arbitrary amendments (Anthon, 1868). This fascinating work provides a key insight into the scholarly discourse surrounding translations of classical texts in the eighteenth century.
