Stated First Edition. 9" X 7 1/4". xviii, 401pp. Very mild sheld wear to covers, corners, and edges of pictorial paper wraps. Pages are clean and unmarked. Binding is sound. A highly presentable copy of this autobiography by one of the pioneers in Perceptual Psychology, Arthur Combs. Edited and with an epilogue by Anne C. Richards, Professor Emerita of Psychology at the University of West Georgia. "This is not just an autobiography of an exceptional man whose life story is well worth knowing, but also a personal history of the pioneering development, significance and evolution of humanistic psychology, education and psychotherapy. Readers around the world will surely be enriched by the way Art lived, his contributions and even the way he chose to die." -David J. Cain, Ph.D., Alliant International University ABOUT THIS BOOK: Arthur W. Combs, Ph.D. (1912-1999), was a psychologist/educator whose influential career spanned six decades. He taught at Syracuse University, the University of Florida and the University of Northern Colorado and published over 150 articles and more than 20 books and monographs (several of which went into revisions and were translated into other languages). In 1949 he developed [with Donald Snygg] a theory for understanding the relationship between human experience [known as Perceptual or Field Psychology] that has endured and serves as the foundation for contemporary practice in the helping profession. The first psychologist elected president of the American Association of Supervision and Curriculum Development [ASCD] (1966), Dr. Combs was also named a fellow in four divisions of the American Psychological Association, and between 1951 and 1952 played a key role in securing passage of one of the first liscensing laws for psychologists in the country. Among the honors and awards he received in his lifetime were the American Personnel and Guidance Association Award for Outstanding Research, demonstrating the crucial role of helpers' belief systems in professional effectiveness (1963); the John Dewey Society Award for distinguished service to contemporary education (1967); and the Charlotte and Karl Buhler Award from the Humanistic Division of the American Psychological Association (1998) for "groundbreaking contributions to psychological theory, educational reform and research in the helping professions."(Publisher) Anne C. Richards, Ed.D., is a Professor Emerita of Psychology at the University of West Georgia. A Phi Beta Kappa graduate of Brandeis University (1965), she studied with such teachers as Arthur W. Combs, Lewis A. Coser, Franz Epting, Everett C. Hughes, Sidney Jurard, James B. Klee, Ted Landsman, Hal Lewis, and Abraham Maslow, sparking her continuing interest in theoretical and applied aspects of Humanistic Psychology. Since 1999, she has served as Trustee of the Field Psych Trust, honoring the life and professional contributions of Arthur W. Combs.(Publisher).

ABOUT THIS BOOK: This book has come into being out of a belief that the ideas achieved and expressed by Arthur W. Combs, even as far back as sixty years ago, seem timeless in their capacity to shed significant light on the human condition. It contains a sampling of Art's writings, highlighting contributions he and his collaborators made in both theoretical and applied areas. It represents an introduction to Art's thinking rather than an in-depth review, and gives emphasis to his earlier rather than his later writings so that present-day readers can better grasp the pioneering nature of their content.(From the Introduction).
