Ceri Richards (illustrator). Under Milk Wood, A Play for Voices, is a 1954 radio drama by Welsh poet Dylan Thomas (1914-1953). It was first commissioned by the BBC, and then adapted for the stage. It has also been filmed twice. In it, a narrator invites the audience to listen to the dreams and innermost thoughts of the inhabitants of the fictional small Welsh fishing village, Llareggub. They include Mrs. Ogmore-Pritchard, relentlessly nagging her two dead husbands; Captain Cat, reliving his seafaring times; the two Mrs. Dai Breads; Organ Morgan, obsessed with his music; and Polly Garter, pining for her dead lover. It is lyrical, impassioned and funny. The Folio Society first published it in 1972, then reprinted it in 1997. This is a copy of the 1997 printing. It is a slim, pretty book, just 93 pages. The whole book is purple, cream and black, with original custom lithographs, done in purple and black, by the Welsh painter Ceri Richards. It comes in a pale gray slipcase. Lovely thick paper. Uncracked spine; it is pristine.
