Hardcover. Condition: Near Fine. Dust Jacket Condition: Very Good. 1st. Cloth, 127 pages, illustrations (some colour); 29 cm. Text in English. Catalogue of an exhibition held at the Deutsche Guggenheim Berlin, October 11, 2002 to January 5, 2003. Firm binding, clean inside copy. Dust jacket nicked once. Another copy available. OVERSIZE! Additional shipping charges may be requested for international & priority orders. *** Gerhard Richter is arguably the most important German artist of the post-war period. He was known as a practitioner of the German variant of Pop art, "Capitalist Realism," in the sixties and seventies. But the artist has always straddled the concerns of both the Pop artists and the Minimalists. In recent years, some of his works have been totally abstract, deconstructing pictorial conventions, as in this commissioned work, "Eight Gray," a series of pieces utilizing mirrored surfaces. The installation is interpreted by the Marxist critic and art historian Benjamin H. D. Buchloh, who is the leading champion of Richter's work. A lavish publication. *** "Deutsche Guggenheim Berlin will present Gerhard Richter: Eight Gray, a new commission project consisting of eight monumental mirrored panels. One of the most influential artists of the twentieth century, Richter has become known for his manipulation of various pictorial conventions. His diverse production, which includes sculptural objects and paintings and ranges from landscapes to monochromes, is characterized as a whole by the artist's steadfast investigation of the nature of looking. Throughout his career he has experimented with the concept of the perceptual frame and, consequently, windows and mirrors; the commission for the Guggenheim grows out of a series of works Richter first conceived in the mid 1960s. The hazy reflections of the artist's series of enameled glass panels articulate the viewer's fleeting relationship to the real while referencing a long history of attempts to depict it on canvas and on film. Gerhard Richter's Eight Gray is the eighth commissioned work Deutsche Guggenheim Berlin." - Publisher. Size: 4to.

Paperback. Condition: Very Good. Museum Boymans-van Beuningen, Published 1989. Paperback, 166 pp.; 27 cm; text in Dutch and English in parallel; edition of 3000 copies; catalogue designed by 8vo, London, printed by Rosbeek, Nuth; illustrated with color plates of the 1988-89 paintings, several double-page, and black-and-white plates of the grey paintings and the October 18, 1977 cycle; list of illustrations, bibliography, exhibitions. In Very Good condition. Pictorial paper covers with French flaps (a Richter abstract in black and white wrapping front and rear, title in red), sewn binding with the stitching visible in the gutter; moderate shelf wear with rubbing and creasing along spine and outer edges, some color loss along edges and at corners, light bumping to corners. Binding tight. Page 37 has one paragraph of the Buchloh essay bracketed in ink with a small ink dot beside the name Stephen Biko; otherwise unmarked. Catalogue of the exhibition held 15 October to 3 December 1989, organized and edited by Richter together with curator Karel Schampers, for which Richter made some 45 new paintings adapted to the museum's galleries, shown alongside six grey paintings of 1966-76 as points of reference. The new work is in two groups: the large abstracts of 1988-89 (Grad, Lot, Rain, Uran, and others, in a palette restrained to blacks, whites, and greys with color breaking through) and the fifteen photo-paintings of the cycle October 18, 1977, taken from press and police photographs of the last days of the Baader-Meinhof group (Youth Portrait, Confrontation, Hanged, Dead, Funeral, Cell, Record Player). Rotterdam was the cycle's fourth showing, after Krefeld, the Portikus in Frankfurt, and the ICA London earlier in 1989 and before its 1990 American tour. Buchloh's essay, A Note on Gerhard Richter's October 18, 1977, reads the cycle against Warhol's Disasters and against the "polit-kitsch" of recent German history painting; Tilroe's introduction and Schampers's foreword take up Richter's refusal of a fixed style. Contents: Acknowledgements (Wim Crouwel); Foreword (Karel Schampers); Gerhard Richter (Anna Tilroe); A Note on Gerhard Richter's October 18, 1977 (Benjamin H. D. Buchloh); Catalogue; List of Illustrations; Bibliography; Exhibitions.
