Paperback. Condition: Fine. 329 pages, illustrations (some colour); 22 cm. Published in collaboration with the University of Iowa Museum of Art, Iowa City. Tight, clean copy. *** "Few artists spanned the movements of early twentieth-century art as completely as did Hans Richter. Richter was a major force in the developments of Expressionism, Dada, De Stijl, Constructivism, and Surrealism, and the creator, with Viking Eggeling, of the abstract cinema. Along with Theo van Doesburg, L szl Moholy-Nagy, El Lissitzky, and a few others, he is one of the artists crucial to an understanding of the role of the arts in the reconstruction era following World War I. Most American scholars have focused on Richter's film work and have favored a strictly formalist approach that separates art and politics. The contributors to this book rewrite Richter's history to include his pivotal role in the development of the early twentieth-century avant-garde and his political activism. When Richter's work, particularly that of his earlier, European career, is viewed in its historical and political context, he emerges as an artist committed to the power of art to change the fabric of social, political, and cultural affairs." - Publisher. *** CONTENTS: Hans Richter: prophet of modernism, by Stephen C. Foster; Abstraction, autonomy, and the contradiction in the politicization of the art of Hans Richter, by Timothy O. Hardcover. Condition: Fine. Dust Jacket Condition: Fair. FitzPatrick, Merry Kone (illustrator). 1st Edition. THE MUSE AND DEACON WRIGHT: A COLLECTION OF VERSE BY L. N. WRIGHT, edited by Ralph H. Houston and Walter H. Richter whose signatures are on the first free endpaper, illustrated by Merry Kone FitzPatrick, hardcover with unclipped dust jacket (price never printed), stated first edition, second printing, 1986. BOOK CONDITION: fine. The text block and illustrations are in fine condition, with no tears, dogears, or marks. No bookplate or signature of a prior owner. Not a library book or remainder. The dark blue leatherette boards are in fine condition. The dust jacket is in fair condition (edge chipping, discoloring, rippling). 8 ¾ x 5 ¾, 105 pages, 13 ounces. XX [From the preface] We read and reread Deacon Wright's poetry because it makes us feel good and we have come to regard some of what he wrote as superior examples of light verse in English. Though we believe that Deacon wrote principally for the joy of writing, certainly not for posterity, we think it a service to his muse and to the SWT [Southwest Texas State University in San Marcos, now Texas State University] tradition to try to preserve examples of his art. [From Appendix D, The San Marcos Years] Deacon came to the SWT faculty in 1925. He had studied at Westminster College and the University of Missouri and had taught in Missouri schools before coming to this appointment. He earned a doctorate from the University of Texas at Austin in 1939. He was the best classical scholar on the English faculty [of SWT] and probably, with the exception of E. O. Tanner, the best on the faculty at large. But his strong intellectual interests were blended with a zest for life and a commitment to a variety of activities. He assumed the office of chairman of the department of English in 1945. He left the faculty in 1954 because of a misinterpretation of his humorous letter sent anonymously to some women friends.
