Edition originale rare de ce mémoire détaché d'un volume de "Mémoires de l'Académie de médecine". Alfred Riembault (1827-1887) fut médecin à l'Hôtel Dieu de Saint-Etienne, médecin de la c…ompagnie des Mines de Saint-Etienne et membre de l'Académie nationale de médecine. Il avait déjà publié en 1861 un ouvrage sur l'hygiène des ouvriers mineurs dans les exploitations houillères, qui comportait un chapitre sur "la maladie de poitrine des houilleurs" (pp. 187-223, avec 10 observations). Depuis cette date, Riembault réalisa 104 autopsies nouvelles d'ouvriers houilleurs "atteints à des degrés divers d'encombrement charbonneux". Ce nouveau travail est de ce fait "plus complet, plus précis" comme le précise Riembault. Cette oeuvre personnelle est divisée en 5 chapitres : étiologie, lésions anatomiques, marche et symptômes, pronostic, traitement. Cette étude fut très remarquée. REFERENCES : Cf. According to Riembault it is characterized by a combination of symptoms among which emphysema and pulmonary catarrh predominate, as well as by particular anatomical lesions. The cause of this condition is almost always revealed by the black sputa to be an accumulation of coal dust in the lungs (encombrement charbonneux). Le docteur a fait soixante-trois autopsies de mineurs, plus celles de onze mineurs morts accidentellement. Les poumons vont du rose au blanc (couleur normale) jusqu'au noir le plus foncé, une série de nuances se succédant insensiblement selon qu'ils ont travaillé six, sept, dix, quinze et trente ans dans les mines. Il a tracé un tableau remarquable des symptômes et de la marche de l'accumulation de la poussière de charbon dans les poumons, et l'on peut dire qu'il a eu le mérite de nous faire connaître l'encombrement charbonneux des houilleurs.".
