Original blue wrappers. Condition: Very Good-. First Edition. xviii, (2), 359, (3) pages; Three early owner names, otherwise clean and secure in original blue printed wrappers with printed border to each panel printed in black. Wrappers significantly chipped along spine and superficial stains (not affecting text block after titlepage). Name on rear pastedown "Franz Haider"; name on title page "And. Holzern"; also faintly visible is a number in pencil on front wrapper "1065." OCLC 758956529 cites only three locations; a fourth with the Publisher's name mispelled as "Hammerick" is at The British Library. Georg Wilhelm Otto von Ries (1763 - 1846). In the foreword, the author apprises the prospective reader that the title of the works should serve as due noticethat these writings are not in the modern romantic style; these are satyrical poems, humorous stories, traditional ballads, etc., that perhaps are not to the popular modern taste. The witty introduction does much to peak the interest of the reader. AUTHOR: Georg Wilhelm Otto von Ries (1763 in Hanau -- 1846 in Copenhagen ) was an officer, a diplomat, and a writer. He attended the University of Giessen, intending to study law but switched to studying mathematics and military science. He became a second lieutenant in the Schleswig Infantry Regiment, continuing his studies in Giessen until 1784. Ries had a very successful military career, serving as an orderly officer to Crown Prince Friedrich. During the campaign of 1788 Ries significantly expanded his military knowledge and skills. At the conclusion of the war in 1789, he was appointed adjutant by the Crown Prince. In 1791 he became a captain and company commander in the royal regiment. In 1795 he was sent on an 18-month journey through Germany to observe the troops there in the First Coalition War. In Frankfurt am Main he rejoined the Crown Prince as adjutant, then was dispatched on an 8-month trip to Vienna accompanying Prince Charles of Hesse. In 1801 he was promoted to major and battalion commander and became adjutant general and companion of King Christian VII. He managed to build a friendship with the shy monarch. When war broke out between England and Denmark in 1807 , Ries was assigned to accompany the king because the crown prince wanted a reliable guard at his father's side. He proved his worth escaping British capture and safely delivering the King to Rendsburg. When the King died, Ries left court service and occupied himself with his literary endeavors. Ries was a member of the Antiquities Society in Copenhagen and worked on the Old Icelandic runes, and he also translated Old Icelandic into German. In addition to Icelandic and Danish, he also spoke German, English and Italian. He spoke Spanish, Russian, Bohemian and Swedish less fluently. Furthermore, during his time with Christian VII, he invented a mathematical instrument called the toponom , for which the Society of Sciences in Copenhagen awarded him a medal in 1804. PUBLISHER: Johann Friedrich Hammerich (17631827) founded a publishing house in 1789. Politically, Altona was for a long time more progressive than its neighboring city of Hamburg, so Hammerich benefited from the milder press censorship in Altona. Numerous magazines and periodicals were published here. The publishing house was run under the name "Johann Friedrich Hammerich" until around 1850. In 1827 the printing company was taken over by Ernst Friedrich Hammerich and Wilhelm Boye Theodor Lesser and in the following years it operated as Hammerich & Lesser. Wilhelm Boye Theodor Lesser became sole owner in 1829.
