Il secolo XIX aveva ereditato dal precedente la caratteristica devozione del Mese di Maggio, ormai discretamente diffusa. Nei suoi preludi essa si era sviluppata come una festa cristiana in contrapposizione alle feste paganeggianti del Calendimaggio. Alle origini i primi codificatori la presentarono come consacrazione del maggio, mese dei fiori, a Maria, mediante la pratica di fiori di virtù. La devozione del Mese di Maggio sacro a Maria trovò facile terreno nei collegi, negli istituti religiosi e nelle case private, ma non tardò ad essere introdotta con fortuna nelle chiese pubbliche. Come nel '700, così agli inizi dell'800 troviamo tra i più fervidi apostoli del Mese di Maggio antichi membri della Compagnia di Gesù, per la quale, scrive il P. Persoglio S. J., Ğera come cosa sua, perché suoi membri furono il Nadàsi, il Partenio, il La Lomia, il Muzzarelli, il De Mariani, il Dorè, insigni introduttori e propagatori di questa divozione, in Italia ed in Franciağ.
