Soft cover. Condition: Fine. 1st Edition. Gift quality glossy softcover with translator's presentation note on half title page: For Mary with love Rob Scholten. ISBN: 9781479728350. 65 poems printed in both French and English. Cute photo-shopped cover image of a white origami paper boat being tossed by the waves of the ocean. Arthur Rimbaud (1854-1891), raised in northern France, burst upon the literary scene in Paris in the sixteenth year of his life at the time of the Franco-Prussian war. His poems speak of his memories, joys, disappointments and agonies, of love and an abhorrence of war and violence, of the French Revolution, a hatred of royalty and , in spite of a strict Roman Catholic upbringing, a dislike of the Church. But Rimbaud revolutionized his art with poems set in worlds and cast in a new language of illusion and fantasy. In just three years he composed a life's work of poetry on rhyme. For two more he wrote numerous essays and a few prose poems, after which he abandoned writing forever. Translator Robert Scholten is Emeritus Professor of Geology at The Pennsylvania State University. Born in The Netherlands, he studied at the University of Amsterdam during World War II, and was arrested for Resistance activities. Arriving in America in 1946, he obtained his PhD at the University of Michigan. Field research in four continents was facilitated by an early love of languages, especially French. Since his retirement in 1985, he divides his time between France and the UlS. Scholten's translation of Baudelaire's Les Fleurs do Mal was published in 2011. Signed by Translator.

Hardcover. Condition: Fine. Dust Jacket Condition: Fine. 1st Edition. 1st Printing. Signed. 192 pages. Published in 2008. Brief Biography on subject. One of Edmund White's finest achievements. The First Hardcover Edition. Precedes and should not be confused with all other subsequent editions. Published in a small and limited first print run as a hardcover original only by a small independent press. The First Edition is now scarce. Presents Edmund White's "Rimbaud: The Double Life of A Rebel". A succinct and original perspective on one of the founders of literary modernism: A brief biography, fittingly enough, on the briefest of literary lives. Arthur Rimbaud famously wrote two, unsurpassable masterpieces BEFORE he was twenty-one years old: "A Season In Hell" (1873) and "Illuminations" (1886), then he abandoned poetry altogether. His unique case remains proof that the point of being a writer is to write a masterpiece, not necessarily a body of work, and in Rimbaud's case, to give up writing thereafter. Edmund White's books on Genet, a massive volume, and Proust, a brief one, complete a great American writer's homage to French literature as no other "foreigner" writer has achieved. An absolute "must-have" title for Edmund White collectors. This copy is very boldly and beautifully signed in black pen-marker on the title page by Edmund White. It is signed directly on the page itself, not on a tipped-in page. Edmund White's signature on this copy is one of the most beautiful we have ever seen. This title is a contemporary classic. This is one of very few such signed copies of the First Hardcover Edition/First Printing still available online and is in fine condition: Clean, crisp, and bright. Please note: Copies available online have serious flaws, are in multiple subsequent printings, or are remainder-marked. This is surely an accessible and lovely alternative. A rare signed copy thus. Winner of the National Book Critics Circle Award in 1994 for "Genet: A Biography". Anointed by Vladimir Nabokov as his American successor. One of the greatest writers of our time. A fine copy. No. 169 of a limited edition of 250 copies. Consists of 29 loose folders, 25 of which are comprised of Rimbaud's poem. Each folder contains 4 line of the text from the 100 line poem in the original French and an English translation by Louis Varèse in parallel along with a Despont illustration. Text is printed letterpress on rag paper. The other four folders are the title page with portrait, chronology of Rimbaud's life, an introduction by Despont with his signature, and a justification/limitation page signed by publisher Luke Ives Pontifell. There are a total of 28 illustrations reproduced by offset lithography, each protected with original tissue guards. All 29 folders and 28 illustrations are present in fine condition. Clamshell box is also in fine ("as new") condition._____DISCUSSION: This is a livre d'artiste edition with copious illustrations by Thierry Despont, known as both an architect and artist. Despont's illustrations are meant to echo Rimbaud's idea of "derangement of the senses". Le Bateau Ivre ("The Drunken Boat") is a poem about a boat that breaks free from its moorings, narrating the boat's euphoric, chaotic voyage through storms, exotic seas and surreal visions, symbolizing Rimbaud's youthful quest for absolute freedom and rebellion against conventional societal norms. One of the most imaginative and original of the Thornwillow Press editions._____NOTE: This is an extremely large, heavy edition and additional postage will be requested for domestic shipping. International shipping cost using USPS International Priority EXPRESS Mail with tracking to most locations in the United Kingdom and Europe will be capped at $100.00 and this will be requested by AbeBooks after purchase.
