Ripalda's Catechism, but the first translation of that work into Nahuatl, Aztec, or the Mexican language. Complete copy of this Catholic catechism in Nahuatl, the main language of Mexico's indigenous population. Noted in Medina, La imprenta en México (4500), Palau (269110), Pilling (2891), and Sabin (71488), it marks the first edition of a catechism widely translated into numerous languages, according to Brunet. Described by Leclerc in Bibliotheca Americana (2334) as the Mexican version of Father Ripalda's renowned catechism, praised for its thoroughness, accuracy, and elegance. The translation is attributed to the esteemed scholar Father Ignacio de Paredes. The dedication, first title page, and introduction are in Spanish, while the second title page and the entire work are in Nahuatl. Ignacio de Paredes, a Jesuit, is credited with the translation from Spanish. The frontispiece of St. Francis Xavier, surrounded by indigenous people, is often missing. It is clear that the image was added to some copies and not to others, so one can say that the integral or original volume did not have the image, making it even rarer. We cannot assure hoy many copies in Libraries do have this fine engraved frontis. "Father Ripalda's Doctrina christiana, first published in Burgos in 1591, went through numerous editions and translations. Medina lists this title under the name of the translator/editor, Ignacio de Paredes. Title and imprint in Spanish on first t.p., in Nahuatl on second, separate t.p.; first t.p. verso has citations from the prophets in Latin and Spanish.
