Ih queste pagine, l'autore cerca di delineare una nuova storia del madrigale cinquecentesco, affrontando alcuni temi relativi a questo genere di componimento, in particolare nella sua versione liberamente intessuta di endecasillabi e settenari: dalle origini all'evoluzione del metro, dalla struttura formale al problematico rapporto con la musica e con il canto (aspetto, quest'ultimo, di grande rilievo, grazie al quale il madrigale ha potuto rappresentare, insieme ad altri generi, le aspirazioni di un Rinascimento particolarmente colto e raffinato), senza peraltro tralasciare le traduzioni e le imitazioni che ne hanno ispirato la formazione. Il volume si propone quindi come un tentativo di offrire nuovi spunti di riflessione sulla poesia italiana del Cinquecento, nel segno di un classicismo inquieto che non esclude momenti di (controllata) sperimentazione lirica.
