Small 12mo, pp xii, lxxiv, 240, title vignette and occasional text decorations, uncut in original boards, the paper of the spine chipped in several places, internally sound and clean, FIRST EDITION, SECOND ISSUE, dated 1823 rather than 1820 on the title page of this popular collection of ballads based upon Ritson's much fuller and more detailed two volume work of 1795. The editor claims to have reprinted all the ballads, but condensed Ritson's copious notes for a young audience.Of course, Robin Hood was already popular in chapbook form, but perhaps this volume did much more to further his celebrity in children's literature.

Green Cloth. Condition: Very Good. Dust Jacket Condition: No dj. Second Edition. Two volume set in plain dark green cloth with paper typewriter written spine labels, now faded and age darkened. Text blocks sound and tight, cracking in gutter to dark-coated endpapers of volume I, volume II gutters tight. General foxing freckles to the pages, mainly near edges and nearer endpapers. Rough-cut text edges are a little dusty and darkened. Frontis engraved plate missing in Volume I, also, paper tape re-inforcement of gutter between pp96/97 of Vol I. Several engarved plates with tissue guards. Volume II in better overall condition with frontis plates present. vi+288pp, 289-575pp. Size: 8vo.

This new edition of Ritson's 1795 work, here with most of the editorial notes removed in order "to produce a book which could with propriety be put into the hands of young persons. [and] that this little volume will prove peculiarly acceptable at the present moment, in consequence of the hero, and his merry companions, having been recently portrayed in the most lively colours by the masterly hand of the author of Ivanhoe [Sir Walter Scott]." lxxiv, 240 pages. A very good copy in the original printed boards and brown paper spine (with a pasted-on spine label). In all, a nice early 19th century children's book in original condition. The sheets are much smaller than the boards and the paper is chipped at the spine ends.

Vol. 1 incorrectly titled 'Scotish song', with the incorrect publication date of 1714. Library bindings, worn along spine margins. De-accessioned from Kingston-upon-Hull public library, with their stamps, labels etc. A little spotting to titles otherwise very good internally. An uncommon title.

Hardcover. Condition: Near fine. Second Edition. Two volumes (complete), octavo size, 587 pp. Joseph Ritson (1752-1803) was an interesting and, even for his day, unusual man. Described by the DNB as an "antiquarian"; at the age of 20, upon reading the "Fable of the Bees" he decided to "forswear all animal foods, and to subsist solely on milk and vegetables." By trade a "conveyancer", he studied law and became a barrister, employing his leisure time as a writer. Never one to run from an argument, in 1784 he took issue with a publication of "Select Scotish Ballads" by one John Pinkerton, claiming they were modern forgeries - which indeed turned out to be the case. Ritson went on to publish, in 1785, "The Caledonian Muse: a Chronological Selection of Scottish Poetry from the earliest times", and later, after a walking tour through Scotland, publishing in 1794 two volumes of "Scotish Song with the genuine Music". This two-volume set the second edition, published in 1869 in Glasgow; per the short introduction by the publisher, "The First Edition of 'Ritson's Scotish Songs' was published in 1794, and the number of copies printed does not seem to have been great, as for many years the work as been very scarce. This, and the fact that it is almost the only one of Ritson's works that has not been reprinted, has induced the Publisher to issue this, the Second Edition" (p. v). While most of us today spell the work "Scottish" with two "t"s, the publisher was careful to point out in a footnote to the Preface on page 1: "The word Scottish is an improper orthograph of Scotish; Scotch is still more corrupt; and Scots (as an adjective) a national barbarism; which is observed here once for all, to prevent the imputation of inconsistency and confusion, as a direct quotation should be always literal." ___DESCRIPTION: Both volumes bound in full tan leather, triple narrow gilt ruled borders on both boards with a small ornament at the corners, spines with six compartments, four richly decorated in gilt, two with the title and volume number, date of publication at the tail of the spines, board edges and turn-ins decorated with gilt, top edges gilt, marbled endpapers, half-titles in red and black, frontis in Volume I a tissue-guarded engraving of a likeness of Ritson with a facsimile signature beneath, frontis in Volume II a tissue-guarded small steel-engraving, title pages in red and black with small armorial illustration, five additional small steel-engraved illustrations throughout, steel-engraved chapter headpieces, musical scores scattered throughout (although many songs giving only the verses); octavo size (8 1/8" by 5 1/4"), pagination: Volume I, [i-vi] [1] 2-288; Volume II, [i-vi] 289-575. ___CONDITION: Overall near fine, the leather bindings smooth and supple, the corners straight with a miniscule amount of rubbing to a few, the text blocks strong and square with all hinges solid, the interiors clean and bright, collated complete with a total of seven steel engravings, and the set entirely free of prior owner markings; the binding on the first volume with a light stain on the back board (not damp), the binding on the second volume with some sunning at the top two inches of the back board, a few spots of light rubbing to the joints, and offsetting to the free endpapers from the turn-ins. Two volumes, 12mo in sixes, pp. [ii], cxix, [i], 289; [ii], 262, [4] corrections; illustrated with wood-engraved vignettes (by Parker after Stothard) and woodcut music throughout; in contemporary calf, spines gilt (a bit rubbed, labels missing, but sound); marbled endpapers. First edition. A major collection of early Scottish poetry and music by Joseph Ritson. In this copy the title page to volume I is in the first state, reading 'Scotish Song' (later corrected to 'Songs'), and with the erroneous date of 'MDCCXIV' both are correct in volume II, and volume I's title was cancelled to effect the changes. Bronson also describes six leaves in the main text as cancels, but of those only L3 (in vol. I) and M4 (in vol. II) are definitely cancels in this copy, and the others a6 and k1 in vol. I, and E4, U2 (possibly) and Y2 in vol. II show no signs of being substitutes. Detailed comparison with other copies would show if there were any changes in the text, and whether this copy shows any early readings not seen by Bronson. Bronson I 23; Lowndes p. 2098. Provenance. Stamp on each title of the Heirlooms of John Brymer (who bought Ilsington House, Devon, in 1861); his collection seems to have been acquired by the bookseller James Stevens Cox, perhaps in the 1960s.

First edition. Like all of Ritson's works of poetical antiquarianism, a genuine contribution to early English poetical knowledge. This is in fact Ritson's most substantial single work, which remained virtually unchallenged and unimproved for more than a century, and indeed is valuable today. As editor, Ritson was predisposed to favour Robin Hood: he was a strong supporter of the French Revolution (even in the mid-1790s he was dating his letters according to the Revolutionary Calendar), and the heroic outlaw who was on the side of the poor very much fitted his political outlook.
