Poster, 340 x 200 mm. An appeal for the citizens and corporation to adhere to old proclamations regarding cleanliness in the city to tackle the pollution in the River Witham. "That no Butcher slay any Beasts in the Streets, whose Blood and Corruption may displease Men, going in the Ways or Streets; and that they cast no Blood no…r Corruption in any Highway, or in the Water of the City on Pain of. 3s 4d." "That no Man or Woman, or Child of Discretion, cast any Dirt or Ashes, or any Manner of Filth, into the Common Waters of the City, or any Manner of Corruption, on Pain of 6s. 8d." Etc. "The above fines may be estimated in their value from the fact that, for a horse being left in the street on market-day, without its owner, the fine was 1d." The quality of the water was an issue in Lincoln and continued to be reported on, and neglected, by the authorities all through the latter half of the nineteenth century until an outbreak of typhoid in 1904 led to 131 deaths when they were obliged to take action. The British Medical Association condemned the actions of those Corporation Members, who had repeatedly voted against action on Lincoln's water.
