Paperback. Condition: Very Good. They were the team from nowhere. In 1961, when Don Revie became manager of Leeds United, they were a struggling Second Division club, in a city where sport meant rugby league or gritty Yorkshire cricket. By the time he became England manager in 1974, Leeds had won two League Championships, the UE…FA Cup twice, the FA Cup and the League Cup, and players like Jack Charlton, Billy Bremner and Johnny Giles were household names. But "The Unforgiven" is the story of a football team that, for all their success, was never accepted. Leeds United may have been one of the most talented sides in English football: they were certainly one of the most controversial - inspiring loathing in opposing fans every bit as intense as the bellicose devotion to their own. On the field the artistry of striker Allan Clarke or Peter Lorimer's thunderous shooting was overshadowed by a reputation for a ruthless, win-at-all-costs professionalism ahead of its time, symbolised by the legendary scything tackles of Norman Hunter. Review's Leeds team - especially in the intimidating arena of Elland Road - took no prisoners. As this book shows, Leeds' unfashionable, outlaw status was hardly unearned, thanks to the eccentric personality of Don Revie himself. In retrospect this was a bizarre way to run a football club. Team-building sessions meant taking players like Paul Madeley, Joe Jordan and Terry Cooper to endless rounds of bingo and carpet bowls. The bad luck of losing three FA Cup finals and coming second in the League five seasons out of nine prompted Byzantine superstitious rituals, like the manager's pre-match stroll to a certain set of traffic lights in Leeds and the exorcism of a Gypsy's curse on the club's ground. Here reigned less a football manager than, in Revie's own estimation, the "head of the family". But whenever his great side were, in the fiery Billy Bremner's words, "let off the leash" - toying with Southampton, for example, to inflict a 7-0 defeat now enshrined in Match of the Day mythology - their sheer brilliance made for a spectacle so compelling it was almost cruel. Now Rob Bagchi and Paul Rogerson, lifetime Leeds supporters both, have talked to surviving team members to tell the full story of one of the most defiantly unconventional sides in British football. The book has been read, but is in excellent condition. Pages are intact and not marred by notes or highlighting. The spine remains undamaged.

Hardcover. Condition: new. Hardcover. Leeds United were founded in 1919 to revive professional football in Yorkshire's biggest city following the expulsion of their fragile and bungling predecessors, Leeds City. A century on from their formation, a club that makes a virtue out of its many ups and downs in its own anthem, has end…ured a turbulent existence of crushing disappointment and conflict tempered by extraordinary, often mercurial, success. When United mark their centenary in October 2019, vivid recollections of their greatest days, the three league championships, FA Cup, League Cup and floodlit memories of nights of European glory will be celebrated throughout the vast fanbase, local and international, such triumphs promoted. Elland Road icons John Charles, Billy Bremner, Jack Charlton, Peter Lorimer, Norman Hunter, Eddie Gray, Tony Currie, John Sheridan, Gordon Strachan, David Batty, Eric Cantona, Gary Speed and Lucas Radebe played for teams that were both revered and reviled, contributing to the club's fame throughout the world. Don Revie's team of the Sixties and Seventies, that immortal line-up that rolls off the tongue of generations of football fans, propelled the club and city to unprecedented heights. But when they reached the top, they failed to plan and there was nowhere to go but down. The theme of the past five decades has been the struggle to get back, a story of great adventures, fleeting splendour, relegation and defiant, hard battles against authority, owners and self-sabotage. So, here we go with Leeds United, a club adorned by hall of fame managers from Major Frank Buckley to Don Revie, Brian Clough, Jock Stein, George Graham and Marcelo Bielsa, is also an institution that has perennially toiled to pay its own way and in recent years has suffered as a vehicle for the greater good of Peter Ridsdale, Kenneth Bates, Massimo Cellino and others. Yet it survives and now thrives because of the millions of people who love it.In The Biography of Leeds United, Telegraph journalist and lifelong fan Rob Bagchi writes the story of this famous club and chronicles a century of history that will educate, entertain and inform both old and new supporters. Packed with fresh stories about and from former players, managers and the money men, as well as the fans, the book is an affectionate and insightful portrait of a football club like no other, 'Super Leeds'. 'A beautiful book, wonderfully written, that is essential for Spurs fans and deserves to be widely read.' - When Saturday Comes In The Biography of Leeds United 'A beautiful book, wonderfully written, that is essential for Spurs fans and deserves to be widely read.' - When Saturday Comes Shipping may be from multiple locations in the US or from the UK, depending on stock availability.

Hardback. Condition: New. A warmly written, readable and intelligent history of this famous football club. published just as United have been promoted back to the Premier League. In The Biography of Leeds United, Telegraph journalist and lifelong fan, Rob Bagchi, chronicles a history that will educate, entertain and inform both o…ld and new supporters. Packed with fresh stories about (and from) former players, managers and money men, the book is an affectionate, comprehensive and blackly humorous portrait of a club like no other. Leeds United were founded in 1919 to revive professional football in Yorkshire's biggest city following the expulsion of their fragile and bungling predecessors, Leeds City. Over a century on from their formation, a club that makes a virtue out of its many ups and downs in its own anthem, has endured a turbulent existence of extraordinary, often mercurial, success tempered by crushing disappointment and conflict. This book is a roar of defiance against the recent period of mediocrity served up prior to the past few seasons of revival and, as well as providing vivid recollections of their greatest days, the three league championships, FA Cup, League Cup and floodlit memories of nights of European glory, it offers a broad sweep of the club's often neglected early history. The Biography of Leeds United includes the voices and thoughts of Johnny Giles, Eddie Gray, Scott Sellars, Gordon Strachan, David O'Leary and Gary Kelly and uses them to look deep into the soul of the club and at the spirit that resides with in it. A passionate manifesto that captures the essence of a club that has for the past five decades been in it's own story of great adventures, fleeting splendour, relegation and defiant, hard battles against authority, owners and self-sabotage, this rousing and comprehensive book is written for the supporters and echoes their passionate cry - We Are Leeds! When United mark their centenary in October 2019, vivid recollections of their greatest days, the three league championships, FA Cup, League Cup, and floodlit memories of nights of European glory will be celebrated throughout the vast fanbase, local and international, such triumphs promoted.
