The Little sisters were the reigning queens of the cozy screwball mystery from the 1930's to the 1950's. Combining the the charm and laughs of a Frank Capra movie with the eccentric characters of a George S. Kaufmann play. "The two elderly aunts liked a glass of sherry, a plate of cookies. .and a nice little game of Russian roulette. But someone else was playing an even deadlier game. Miss Ivy and Miss Violet quarreled about everything, especially about who would get their money when they were gone: their nephew Richard or the glamorous Broadway actress Ada Terry, related to them by marriage. It got to the point that the only way they could settle the dispute, or so they thought, was to play Russian roulette with one another. The wishes of whichever sister survived would prevail. Richard was upset when he learned about their little game and began substituting blanks for the live cartridges they used. He also thought he'd come up with the perfect scheme to end the quarrel by telling them he intended to marry Ada. But the last thing he expected was for Ada to set a date for the wedding and announce it to the whole town. His plan was turning into a total disaster when the two old ladies, still quarreling, disappeared. What's a little bigamy here and there when you're trying to catch the person who murdered you? Dick Rouston claimed Jane Cowrer murdered his fiancée, which made for a pretty awkward situation, since Jane was equally convinced that Dick had murdered her. No, this isn't a ghost story, although there is an old black piano that appears to play by itself every night and can only be heard by Jane. Of course, Jane isn't really Jane. She's wealthy Gloria Rouston--or at least she was until someone pushed her off a bridge one night while she was vacationing with Dick and several gold-digging friends and relatives. She managed to escape that attempt on her life with only a concussion and a few scratches. She figured the killer(or killers) would just finish her off if she returned home, so she used the wad of money in her purse to pay for a little plastic surgery and went back to her home town to do a little sleuthing, hoping that no one would see plain old Gloria in the new body and face sported by the now glamorous Jane. And she didn't really set out to marry John Cowrer, the nephew of the woman who helped nurse her back to health, but she had to admit that a new husband provided excellent cover, provided you didn't think too much about the bigamy laws. It's another outrageous plot from two of the most inventive mystery writers of the 1930s and 1940s, although the tone in this 1948 novel is a bit darker than usual. Trade Paperback.

Bickering ex-lovers and a disappearing corpse highlight this 1952 comedy by the queens of screwball. There was no question that Agatha Bunson hated her cook. Em could cook. Just about everyone agreed on that point. Agatha, however, despised Em's slovenly ways and was forever cleaning up after her. If she could, she would have fired Em ages ago. But an odd clause in her father's will prevented her from doing that. Now Em was dead and Agatha assumed she must have done it, although she had no recollection of killing her. But lately, Agatha had been prone to walking in her sleep and she figured it was during one of these nocturnal rambles that she did in the disgusting old creature. What's done is done, Agatha thought, and so she propped Em up in a rocking chair and squirreled her away in a sealed closet. There'd be time enough later to figure out what to do with the body. Of course Em was soon missed. Cleanliness might not have been her forte but her food tasted good and Agatha's cooking was a poor substitute. In fact, people were beginning to get a bit testy at meal times. And Christine and Allen, two doctors who had sleeping rooms as well as medical offices in the boarding house, were naturally testy-at least with each other, having once been engaged back before Christine went to medical school. Although Agatha had the most to gain from Em's death, Inspector Lewis had plenty of other suspects among Em's relatives and the other boarders. But everything got a lot more complicated when Em's corpse went missing and things started to go bump in the night in the basement. This 1952 charmer is vintage Little, writing in the second to the last year oftheir collaboration. Trade Paperback.

The Black Smith is vintage Little, complete with a couple you just know will bicker all the way to "I do," a corpse that won't stay put, a cast of characters that would do any loony bin proud, and a closed setting this time a country hospital where the staff works, lives and engages in a little mayhem on the side. Judith Onslow took the job as head nurse to start life over again after she was named corespondent in a messy divorce, only to discover that the brother-in-law of her ex-lover is the doctor in charge of the hospital. Then there's Shirley, the new switchboard operator, who arrives looking just a bit on the trampy side and then proceeds to turn herself into Miss Prim and Proper. If these aren't enough ingredients to fuel a potent homicidal cocktail, toss in a doctor who drinks, an amiable playboy who's always hanging around, a birdlike woman who is the former head nurse, some demanding patients, one elderly doctor who's crippled by arthritis and another, even older doctor who likes to wander the halls of the hospital wielding a very sharp knife.
