Hardcover. Condition: Good. 1st Edition. Presumed First Edition (NAP, 1946 on the title page). Is this book signed by the author? And is it singularly unique for his having added neat penned captions or comments in addition to the printed ones? These penned captions/comments are not in other copies of this book. The handwriting also matches the handwriting in the signed inscription. The inscription, on the first front end paper, reads: 'Best Wishes, Dalton. From my small experience, this is all quite up to par, Bobbie.' I've provided photographs of a page with these added comments-- 21 of the 57 cartoons have them. You can see the covers in the photos. There is some minor handling soiling. There's a small scuff at the front bottom corner. A little bit of the cloth over the bottom third of the juncture between the spine and rear cover had lifted up a little and I glued it back into place (fifth photo). There's some rub-through at the cover corners, a small spot of it on the front top edge and another small spot of it at the bottom rear edge. The middle cover edges show some rubbing and several small spots of rub-through as well. There is a crease just below the rear covers top edge. The book is solidly bound from cover to cover with nicely tight pages throughout and nicely tight covers as well. There is tan shading, as you can see, on the signed page. That's also the case with the blank rear end paper, and just adjacent to the juncture on both inside covers. The pages are in quite decent shape. You will come upon an occasional amber spot of foxing off the top or middle page edge. I'm not seeing any handling soiling anywhere. I'm not seeing any conspicuous creasing, no placeholder creases. There are no markings or attachments. Beside the writing I have referenced the Foreword has a penned underlining below the words 'apertif to those who see medical school in their future.' Here is the Foreword: 'This book is a collection of 57 cartoons drawn from my experiences, sometimes gay, sometimes grim, while in medical school. In as representative a manner as I could conceive, they typify all the situations which tickle the students always receptive ego, arouse surging waves of anxiety, fatigue him to the point of stupor, plunge him into the depths of despair or raise him to the heights of hilarity. It is my hope that, for those who are curious, this book may throw a little light on the life of a medical student, that it will serve as an apertif to those who see medical school in their future-- a pleasant reminiscence for those who have it in their past. For those who are students now, this is intended as a mirror wherein they may find their reflection cast. This mirror is selective. The reflection here is humorous for the sake of amusement. R.A.M.'. Robert A. McCleary (illustrator). Signed by Author(s).
