Cloth with dustjacket. Condition: Gut. XI, 104 p. Aus der Bibliothek von Prof. Wolfgang Haase, langjährigem Herausgeber der ANRW und des International Journal of the Classical Tradition (IJCT) / From the library of Prof. Wolfgang Haase, long-time editor of ANRW and the International Journal of the Classical Tradition (IJCT). - Einband stark berieben, Randläsuren mit Einrissen, Bleistiftanmerkung auf Vorsatz / binding heavily rubbed, marginal tears, pencil annotation on endpaper. - Few Greek tragedies confront the critic with more varied difficulties than the Suppliants, and perhaps no other tragedy has been the subject of such diverse interpretations. This book offers a fresh interpretation of the play which provides a rewarding approach to Aeschylean tragedy. Professor Murray has made no attempt to discuss or refer to all existing interpretations of the Suppliants and most of his findings are based on independent study of the text of the play. He examines the techniques by which Aeschylus integrates and manipulates the motif of Io, ancestress of the Danaids, in his poetic structure, and demonstrates that this web of imagery is a vitally important vehicle of meaning, indispensable to a correct interpretation of the Danaid trilogy. It is argued that the Suppliants is a work of high and sophisticated art, a product of the artists mature period, possibly composed in the 460s and probably a near neighbor, in time, of the Prometheus Bound. / CONTENTS I. Introduction II. The Imagery of the Suppliants III. The Aeschylean Io IV. The Meaning of the Motif of Io V. Hypermnestra and the Themes of the Trilogy Appendix A: The Chronology of the Suppliants and the Prometheus Bound Appendix B: Line 8 and the Motivation of the Danaids Bibliography.
