First Edition
Softcover. Condition: Near Fine. First Edition. [nice copy, minor handling wear, small ink smudge/streak at top of rear cover]. (Cinà ma Club) Series (B&W photographs, frontispiece caricature sketch) "The 'Mecca of cinema' -- to use Blaise Cendrarsâ apt phrase -- is sixty years old; it was in late 1911 that the first film studio was built in a burgeoning Los Angeles suburb. Fifteen years earlier, in the heart of a vast, still largely wild valley, Hollywood was nothing more than a simple ranch, recently christened with that name by chance. But the pioneers of the 7th Art would soon appear on the heels of the early settlers: D.W. Griffith and Mack Sennett, Douglas Fairbanks and Mary Pickford, Thomas Ince and Cecil B. DeMille, followed by Chaplin and Keaton, Tom Mix and William Hart -- the acrobats of slapstick and the knights of adventure. And the poets of finance, too. A whole new world was coming into being, as the Indians who had camped there -- whether they liked it or not -- gave way to Westerns. It is this extraordinary saga that Robert Florey recounts. His book describes, for the first time, the prehistory, birth, tentative beginnings, and formative years of the 'dream factory.'" (Translation of rear-cover blurb.) Florey came to Hollywood from his native France in 1921; at first a journalist and publicity man, he was also a bit of a social gadfly, and was very adept at ingratiating himself to the Hollywoodians. (This book's frontispiece is a sketch of him drawn and inscribed by Charlie Chaplin in 1922.) He soon became a filmmaker himself, making his own experimental films and also securing work in the Hollywood studios, first as an assistant director but rapidly advancing to the direction of feature films. From 1927 through the end of the 1940s, he directed dozens of Hollywood films, as well as performing occasional screenwriting chorese. Most of his films were "B" product, but often displayed his personal touch. He transitioned neatly into television in the 1950s, directing numerous episodes of dozens of shows until about the mid-1960s. Florey wrote several books about Hollywood beginning in the 1920s; all were published in French, and to my knowledge none have been translated into English. The focus of this volume is on the very early years of the film industry in Hollywood (mostly prior to 1920); there is a biographical section with brief biographies of a couple of dozen directors who entered the industry at that time and went on to work well into the heyday of the studio system, and also a filmography of Florey's own feature film work.
