Soft cover. Condition: New. Hawkins, Robert (illustrator). 1st Edition. This is the 32 page full color 8.5 x 11 perfect bound catalog for the Robert Hawkins art show, I Faked the Ghosts of Winchester House!" exhibited at Village Works Gallery and Bookstore in the East of NYC from October 8 to October 31, 2021. All catalogs are numbered, dated and signed by the artist, Robert Hawkins. "Robert Hawkins is not a big famous artist because he has resisted all attempts to make him that. And, up to a point, that was necessary and right. But now that he has a large, madcap, ferociously witty, and startlingly original body of work behind him; now that he has gone through his self-crucifixion phase and resurrected himself from the dead; now that he has allowed the smile to follow quickly the scowl; now, I think, it's time he can relax and enjoy making artwork on his own roving, druidical, picaroon, anarchic, swashbuckling terms." Includes a chronology and checklist of Indiana's work. Robert L. B. Tobin was a notable San Antonio philanthropist (the Tobin Wing at the McNay Art Museum was opened in his honor in 1988). Tobin underwrote 'Don Carlos' for the opening celebration of HemisFair, the official World's Fair, in 1968 where he served as Cultural Vice-President. Robert Indiana was commissioned to create the official poster for HemisFair, during which the largest collection of Indiana's work to date was installed at the McNay Art Museum. With Tobin's involvement with HemisFair, and his close ties to the McNay, it is perhaps during this time that Tobin's friendship with Robert Indiana began to flourish. In the coming years, Tobin became one of Robert Indiana's largest collectors and a number of his paintings and graphics are included in this exhibition.

Originally created in 1964 for the Museum of Modern Art s Christmas card, the design quickly became a cultural phenomenon, later adapted into a U.S. postage stamp and a series of monumental public sculptures. * As a prime example of hard-edged abstraction, LOVE features flat, vibrant colors with crisp, geometric edges, a style that gained prominence in the 1960s. The artwork s universal message of love and unity resonated deeply with the era s social and political movements, becoming an enduring symbol of peace and optimism. * A Garden of Love is one of many reinterpretations of the original LOVE design, incorporating six variations inspired by flowers Rose, Phlox, Tulip, Lily, Zinnia, and Lilac paying homage to the flower power movement. Indiana s adaptation of LOVE across different languages, mediums, and formats solidifies its status as a timeless emblem of hope, connection, and cultural revolution. * Indiana s work is featured in major museums, including the Museum of Modern Art (MoMA), the Whitney Museum, and the Smithsonian American Art Museum. His influence extends beyond fine art, as his designs have been adapted into sculptures, postage stamps, and large-scale public works. ***** Pop Art movement emerged in the 1950s and 1960s, transforming everyday objects, advertising, and mass media into bold, colorful artworks.
