Boekelheide, this volume presents the results of a fifteen-year study of the seabird assemblage breeding on the Farallon Islands, off the coast of central California, examining the community in relation to the California Current upwelling system. Opening chapters address seasonal and annual patterns in the surrounding marine environment and the feeding ecology of Farallon seabirds. The bulk of the work consists of species accounts contributed by Ainley, Boekelheide, R. Philip Henderson, Craig S. Strong, Teresa M. Penniman, Stephen H. Morrell and other collaborators, treating Leach's and ashy storm-petrels, Brandt's cormorant, pelagic and double-crested cormorants, the western gull, common murre, pigeon guillemot, Cassin's auklet, and the rhinoceros auklet and tufted puffin. Each account draws on long-term breeding data to relate reproductive performance, diet, and population dynamics to fluctuations in food availability and oceanographic conditions.
