Le texte de cette édition a été établi d'après l'exemplaire unique de l'édition princeps de 1532 conservée à la Bibliothèque nationale de France (Réserve des livres rares, RES-Y2-2146).Les notes critiques très fouillées et d'une grande qualité, ont été rédigées par Robert Marichal, archiviste paléographe.Tirage total à 570 exemplaires numérotés. L'un des 460 sur vélin de Vidalon. Notre exemplaire porte le n°449.Très bel exemplaire.

Page de titre imprimée en vert et noir, texte dans des encadrements décoratifs de couleur vert amande figurant des vagues e…t 40 planches en couleurs d'Edmond Dulac (1882-1953) contrecollées dans des triples encadrements marrons, toutes sous serpentes légendées. Belle édition illustrée de cette traduction française de Robert Lefranc de la pièce de Shakespeare "The Tempest". La première édition anglaise paraît en 1908. Né en France, mais ayant choisi d'émigrer en Angleterre à l'âge de 22 ans, Dulac "élabora son style à partir des miniatures persanes, de l'illustrateur anglais Arthur Rackham, des graveurs sur bois japonais, et aussi des préraphaélites et de l'Art Nouveau" (Benezit, IV, 838). D'autres ouvrages de la même collection chez Piazza ont été illustrés par Dulac : Contes des mille et une nuits (1907), La belle au bois dormant (1910), La reine des neiges (1911), Le Rubaiyat d'Omar Khayyam (1910).Aux côtés de Rackham, Dulac est une des figures majeures de l'âge d'or de l'illustration (premier quart du XXe siècle), il est l'auteur de nombreuses illustrations de livres populaires, notamment des oeuvres des soeurs Brontë, d'Edgar Allan Poe ou de Hans Andersen. Un très bel exemplaire en excellente condition de conservation.Provenance : ex-libris alsacien de Maurice Ulmann.
