The original green gilt-blocked cloth boards remain well-preserved, exhibiting only mild rubbing to the extremities and slight bumping to the spine ends, which is typical for a volume of this a…ge. The gilt lettering on the spine and front board retains a pleasing brightness, unoxidised and entirely legible. The textblock is tightly bound; however, the untrimmed edges are significantly darkened and heavily toned, bearing consistent dust-soiling. Internally, there is pronounced browning and offsetting to the front pastedown and free endpapers, likely resulting from poor-quality acidic paper or a previous dust-wrapper. Scattered foxing is evident throughout the preliminary leaves, most notably marring the half-title and title page, though the central text remains crisp, legible, and largely unmarked. Catalogue Note: This volume represents the eighth instalment in the ambitious encyclopedic anthology of nineteenth-century verse. Most critically for collectors, this specific volume features the first appearance in a book of the poetry of Gerard Manley Hopkins. Following Hopkins's death, his friend and literary executor Robert Bridges cautiously introduced his groundbreaking work to the public, contributing a brief biographical notice and selecting his poems for inclusion here,decades before the landmark 1918 posthumous collection.
