He played for the club until he was 38, in a time of widespread hunger, ice cream-eating assassins and war, while the seeds of fascism took root in Italy. Posing nonchalantly for the camera in his team's famous red and black stripes, cigarette in hand, he openly drank Scotch whisky before, during and after matches, to recharge his batteries. Kilpin died in obscurity in 1916 while his club went on to become one of the most successful in world football. One hundred years after this death, Kilpin is regarded as the father of Italian football. To the fans of his team he is, simply, The Lord of Milan.

In un periodo di fama diffusa, di legge marziale, di guerra e di assassini mangiatori di gelato alla crema, avrebbe speso ogni momento libero giocando con una palla di cuoio pesante su campi fangosi con il suo gruppo di 'fratelli.' Ma tutto questo lo avrebbe portato a fondare, straniero in terra straniera, quella che sarebbe diventata una delle più intitolate squadre di calcio al mondo: l'AC Milan, portandola alla vittoria dei suoi primi tre titoli nel campionato italiano. Kilpin morì nell'oscurità nel 1916, mai conosciuto in Inghilterra e ben presto dimenticato in Italia: seppellito in una tomba senza nome, i suoi resti furono riscoperti in tempo per il centenario del suo club. Cent'anni dopo la sua morte, da molti è considerato il padre del calcio italiano. Per i tifosi del suo club lui è, semplicemente, Il Lord del Milan.
