    Paper. Condition: Good. First Edition. An Original Third Person Handwritten Letter and Signed by Prime Minister Robert Peel. Dated 1843. The letter thanks Lt Col Norcliffe for his communication. Sir Robert Peel, 2nd Baronet, 1788-1850 was a British Conservative statesman who served twice as Prime Minister of the United Kingdom (1834-1835 and 1841-1846) simultaneously serving as Chancellor of the Exchequer (1834-1835) and twice as Home Secretary (1822-1827 and 1828-1830). He is regarded as the father of modern British policing, owing to his founding of the Metropolitan Police Service. Peel was one of the founders of the modern Conservative Party. The letter confirms a draft for 100 guineas from the King to contribute towards a monument to the memory of Sir Thomas Picton in Carmarthan Wales. A public monument was erected to his memory in St Paul's Cathedral, by order of Parliament, and in 1823 another Picton Monument was erected at Carmarthen by subscription, the king contributing a hundred guineas. An Original Military Commission and Subsequent Discharge for Lieutenant Hugh Robert Duff in the 9th Regiment of Foot, signed by King William IV and Prime Minister Robert Peel, as Home Secretary. Dated 1830. Hugh Robert Duff was born in November 1805.1 He was the son of Hugh Robert Duff, 3rd of Muirtown and Sarah Louise Forbes.1 He died on 13 January 1830 at age 24 bigly likely in some military capacity.
