Number 205 of 160 copies on Ingres numbered 66 to 225, from a complete run of 225, all numbered, with the first ten on papier ancien, the next 20 on Ingres rose and 35 on Montgolfier. Paris [Nice], n.p. [Andre? Bottin], 28 November 1945. £1,250.00 Crisp, clean copy, slight endemic browning, wrapper a trifle worn, glacine a tad shabby, the leaf on which the moveable is mounted is starting. Rare in both commerce and institutions, Harvard, has #6 from the e?dition de te?te (Nordmann copy and subsequently JMSD's other copy) and #55. Dutel 938, Pia 2, Pierrat pp-32-3. Provenance: Emmanuel Pierrat's copy. Pierrat considers this clandestinely printed ? Salauderie' to be the celebrated libertine's '. most sulphurous.', it satirizes a bourgeois couple's experiences in a brothel that they take to be the resi- dence of the Turkish ambassador and his harem. Characterised by an invented, almost Dadaist, lan- guage that Pierrat describes as an '.imaginary, argotic vocabulary.' , it is a famous ?pochade naturaliste' that remained unpublished for many years because of the two known manuscripts being ' .strictly guarded by bibliophiles.' (until that is another copy was found). This titillating, comedic play was performed and written by Pinchon and Maupassant and their friends Octave Mirbeau, Maurice Leloir and others. Pinchon played ?The Toque' , ?The Captain' , a ?Hunchback' , ?An Englishman' and a ?Cesspit emptier' . Maupassant dragged up to play a ? loose woman' under the alias of ?Joseph Prunier'. The moveable depicts a 'salon with Oriental hangings' which is one of the two locations. The other being a brothel parlour in which a double lithographic pair of card curtains open to reveal another lithograph of a man with a huge smile and bearing a huge tumescent penis which is being stroked by one of two women dressed in harem pants and veils (eight assisted with the second performance). Flaubert, the great giant of French letters, saw it and remarked afterwards to Emile Zola that it was 'refreshing' . The eight harem girls included Valtesse de la Bigne and Suzanne Lagier who left be- fore the end (p-241 Saran Alexandrian -Histoire de la Litte?rature E?rotique ,1989) and are known as the great courtesan/model for Zola's ?Nana' and a singer respectively. Nana's inclusion is a case of art imitating life imitating art perhaps. Pierrat notes that Maupassant also named his skiff La Feuille de Rose and that rather ironically perhaps he died in a medical institution in the wealthy Parisian district of Passy, that is today the Turkish Ambassador's seat. 220025.
