Ambos textos provocaron una polémica pública, fundamentalmente en contra, en medio de la cual Necker acabó presentando la dimisión después de que el Rey rechazara que interveniese en los gastos militares y de que le paralizase el establecimiento de aquellas administraciones provinciales. El volumen que ofrecemos recoge, junto a estos dos textos de Necker, dos de los más virulentos que se publicaron contra sus posiciones: Les Comments y la Lettre du marquis de Caracciole à M. d?Alembert, Lettre que conocería numerosas versiones apócrifas posteriores. Publicadas como anónimas, parece que ambas se debieron a la mano del también fisiócrata Charles Alexandre de Calonne.
