A scandal surrounded the remains, as Tweddell's detailed travel letters, journals, and pictures disappeared due to the apparently neglect and appropriation of Lord Elgin. This work and the search for Tweddell's remains was undertaken by his brother, Robert Tweddell.'Remains of John Tweddell' is in part a memorial to John Tweddell, an also an attack on Lord Elgin. The young John Tweddell had an interest in becoming a diplomat, started on a European tour in 1795, travelling across the continent and meeting many prominent figures of the day, including Madame de Stael and Jacques Necker.Prior owner's ink inscriptions to the recto of the front endpaper, 'F.
