Gorredijk, Sterck & de Vreese, 2019. 4to. Pictorial boards. With 250 photographic illustrations. 320 pp. Abraham Nicolaas Jan Thomassen à Thuessink van der Hoop (1893-1969) became famous as captain of the Fokker F.VII H-NACC with which he undertook the first flight to the Dutch East Indies in 1924. In the years 1937-1941, Jan van der Hoop, as he called himself briefly, compiled a documentary photo archive of more than 1,250 cityscapes of what was then Batavia for the collection of the Royal Batavian Society of Arts and Sciences. A selection of 250 annotated photos from this unique visual document and the life of Jan van der Hoop form the core of this book. Four hundred years after the foundation of Batavia, the compilers and authors offer a fascinating glimpse into the waning days of colonial Batavia in this magnificent edition.
