L'autrice fornisce una descrizione della lingua impiegata da Francesco Petrarca nelle sue opere volgari, i Rerum vulgarium fragmenta (o Canzoniere) e i Triumphi. Allo studio del sistema grafico-fonetico e dell'assetto morfologico il volume affianca l'analisi delle strutture sintattiche e testuali e del lessico. Dall'indagine emergono la natura composita e il carattere culturale della lingua di Petrarca, che dà vita a un tessuto linguistico solo in apparenza piano e omogeneo, ma in realtà ibrido di forme fiorentine coeve e arcaiche, di dantismi e di toscanismi, nutrito di latinismi e percorso da tensioni sintattiche non immediatamente evidenti.
