Hardcover. Condition: Good. Dust Jacket Condition: Fair. 309, [3] pages. Inscribed by the author on the fep. The inscription reads To my dear friend, Herman Jasch with affectionate regards. Willard Robertson Hollywood, California 24 March 1943. The dust jacket has wear, tears, chips and soiling. Willard Robertson (January 1, 188…6 April 5, 1948) was an American actor and writer. He appeared in more than 140 films from 1924 to 1948. Robertson first worked as a lawyer in Texas, but he left his profession for a sudden interest in acting after being encouraged to do so by Joseph Jefferson. Robertson's initial venture onto the stage did not last. He returned to the practice of law as an attorney with the Interstate Commerce Commission. During World War I, he was an administrator in the Chicago office of the federal railway police. He appeared on Broadway in 16 plays from 1907 to 1930. Robertson played supporting roles in many Hollywood films from 1930 until the year he died, typically portraying men of authority such as doctors, elected officials, military officers, and lawyers. He played Jackie Cooper's stern but loving father in the drama Skippy and its sequel Sooky. He will be best remembered for his role as the 'Prison Board Chairman' in the crime drama film noir, "I Am A Fugitive From A Chain Gang", which was directed by Mervyn LeRoy, and which also starred Paul Muni, Glenda Farrell, and Helen Vinson, tells the story of a wrongly convicted James Allen who serves in the intolerable conditions of a Southern chain gang, which later comes back to haunt him. He also wrote the novel Moon Tide which was turned into Archie Mayo's drama thriller Moontide. With all the exotic earthiness that characterized his remarkable novel, Mood Tide, Willard Robertson has again woven a story as harsh and tender and genuine as life itself. Milo hailed from Nova Scotia, with a love of blue water part of his being. But he followed the sea no longer and had given his solemn promise to his young wife, who was afraid. Then Connie the Greek appeared unexpectedly, and the story he told made Milo forget his promise. when he reached the dock, however, Connie's boat had sailed and, through a tragic circumstance, Milo found himself a fugitive. He headed south, for Connie would be in Miami and the spring and he and Milo shared the same dream. His flight led him, through many vicissitudes, down the Atlantic Coast. Fall overtook him in Chesapeake Bay for he had no money and must mover warily. There, of the the morning mists, he saw a lonely island with a lighthouse and thither he steered his stolen boat. A man who is cold and hungry must take a few changes. What Milo found on the island changed the whole course of his life--and other lives as well. Excitement, suspense, humor--and even horror--interlace in this story. The characterization is deft and penetrating, drawn from the amazing human material Mr. Robertson discovered along the shores and among the islands of the Bay. There is Captain Dan Toffey who posted ribald but effective signs for duck hunters. Then there is Margie, the girl who complicates Milo's already complicated life, and the ghostly Charlie, as macabre a figure as ever sent chills down a reader's spine. And there are others, grim, amiable, eccentric. South from Yesterday is told with consummate skill and understanding. First Edition [stated], presumed first printing.
