Cloth. Condition: Very Good. None (illustrator). An uncommon volume providing a commentary on the oldest monastic rule in the Western Church. A Scottish History Society edition of Robertus Richardinus' commentary on the Rule of St Augustine. Predominantly published in in Latin, with an introduction in English. Written around the year 400, the Rule of Saint Augustine is a document that served as an outline for religious monastic life. It is the oldest monastic rule in the Western Church, and outlines rules surrounding chastity, poverty, obedience, detachment from the world, the apportionment of labour, fraternal charity, prayer, fasting, abstinence, and caring for the sick. The present volume is based on a sixteenth century transcript of Robertus Richardinus' exegesis. The British historian and polemicist George Gordon Coulton lectured at the University of Cambridge and was known for his numerous works on medieval history. With a list of subscribers to the Scottish History to the rear. With eleven pages of publisher's adverts to the rear. Prior owner's bookplate to the front pastedown. From the library of Jesus College Oxford. With a couple of institutional stamps to the verso of the front endpaper. In the publisher's original green cloth binding. Externally, smart. Very lightly rubbed to the boards, with a little bumping to the extremities, and the head and tail of the spine. Internally, firmly bound, with bright and clean pages throughout. Very Good. book.
