Rare première édition. Précédé de l'Histoire critique de ces calculs, contenant leur métaphysique & leur théorie par Alexandre Savérien (1720-1805). Robillard était le fils, mort prématurément, d'un professeur d'architecture à l'école d'artillerie de Metz. Cet ouvrage est un traité sur les sections coniques qu'il avait présenté à 16 ans, en 1740, à l'Académie royale des Sciences et qu'il fit imprimer treize ans plus tard. Lombard fut effectivement nommé, en 1748, professeur aux écoles d'artillerie à Metz, sur les démission et présentation de son ami [Robillard père], qui étoit devenu son beau-père. «J'ai retrouvé en vous, lui disoit celui- ci avec l'effusion d'une ame dans laquelle une grande satisfaction succède à une grande peine ; j'ai retrouvé les talens dont j'avois apperçu le germe dans un fils qu'une mort prématurée a ravi à ma tendresse et à mes espérances ; vous m'en tiendrez lieu, vous seul pouvez me consoler de sa perte ! ». «Le fils Robillard, enlevé aux sciences à l'âge de vingt ans, a laissé un ouvrage intitulé : Application de la géométrie ordinaire et des calculs différentiel et intégral à la résolution de plusieurs problêmes. Cet ouvrage a paru en 1753, in-4° orné de 30 planches, à Paris, chez Antoine Jombert. Dès 1740, époque où l'auteur n'avoit que seize ans, l'Académie des sciences avoit porté de son travail le jugement le plus favorable: « . On a trouvé, disoit-elle, toutes « les propositions bien démontrées, la plupart curieuses et quelques-unes nouvelles». (Mem. de l'Acad. des sciences , année 1740 , p. 64). Outre les 30 planches de figures de mathématiques, l'ouvrage est orné de 5 grandes vignettes en tête et 1 dans le texte figurant des allégories de la géométrie, par Charles-Nicolas Cochin.
