Paperback. Condition: New. Welsh Canoe Classics: A Canoeist and Kayaker's Guide is an illustrated journey through the finest touring routes of Wales - from serene lakes and winding canals to majestic estuaries and whitewater rivers, as they can only be seen from canoe or kayak.Written by three highly experienced paddlers - Eddie Palmer, Adam Robson and Nigel Wilford - this comprehensive guide showcases the best inland and coastal canoe and kayak trips in Wales, with detailed route descriptions, full-colour photographs and clear maps.Inside you'll find:64 routes and tours across rivers, lakes, estuaries and canalsOptions for open canoes, sit-on-tops and touring kayaksSeven whitewater trips for those seeking extra adventureDetailed route notes, maps and stunning photographyIdeas for multi-day trips with camping optionsWhy this guide stands out:Combines practical guidance with scenic inspirationAll routes are accessible yet diverse - ideal for every skill levelPerfect for planning voyages or revisiting favourite waterwaysWhether you're an experienced paddler or new to canoe touring, Welsh Canoe Classics will inspire exploration and help you discover the beauty and variety of Wales' waterways.Important NoticeThere was an incident in 2021 in which there were four fatalities on the weir described on page 120. This tragedy occurred when the river was in full flood and the water levels were off the scale. The description is essentially correct (if a bit lighthearted in the light of what happened) in reasonable water levels, but the authors would underline the suggestion that the weir be inspected before setting off.

Paperback. Condition: new. Paperback. Foreshadowing our unseemly haste to fight for King and Country in 1914, New Zealanders were enthusiastic supporters of the colonial war between Britain and the Boers when it was declared in 1899. The country welcomed the chance to prove itself and its loyalty to the British Empire on an international stage. Our contribution was small - just 6500 troops sent to fight - but our response to the conflict was on a grander scale. In an outpouring of patriotic sentiment, many thousands followed the stories of the sieges of Mafeking, Kimberley and Ladysmith. There was memorabilia everywhere, and it seemed as if everyone was either raising funds or joining cadet corps, including many women and girls. Little has been written of this important period in New Zealand's history. This is the first book to offer a finely grained analysis of the nation's perceptions and expectations of the war, Maori responses to the conflict, the effect of war-related deaths, injuries and disease on the country, and its economic impact. It also demonstrates that the building of our national identity through military engagement began well before Gallipoli and the Western Front. The fascinating account of an often overlooked war. Illustrated by Tony Clarkson. Folio; original black rexine; pictorial dustwrapper; pp. xx + 320, incl. index; illustrated with distribution maps and line drawings for each of the species considered. Dustwrapper sunned on spine panel, water-stained, and a little edgeworn, with simple sellotape repair to top edge; front endpaper slightly soiled; occasional very light foxing. Very good condition, in a fair dustwrapper. "The Bird Atlas of Natal is quite unlike all other Southern African bird books. The observations of the authors and birdwatchers throughout the Province during the period January 1970 - December 1979 have been plotted on to maps which offer a precise record of the distribution of 530 species. For each of the birds there is also a short description of its world distribution and its local habitat, and a line illustration specially drawn for this book.".
