World War II Belgian resistance fighter Charlier met and married a United States Army nurse. His fictionalized account of the events encountered trying to enter the U.S. became the 1949 film I Was a Male War Bride, directed by Howard Hawks and starring Cary Grant and Ann Sheridan. In this, his second novel, Charlier relates "the further hilarious misadventures and complications which awaited the male war bride in America as he tried to gain citizenship, became an author and went to Hollywood as an adviser to his movie."
