Wurzbach XXVI, 214. Anton Rochel, Botaniker, geb. am 18. 6. 1770 in Neunkirchen (Niederösterreich), gest. am 12. 5. 1847 in Graz. Rochel ging bei einem Chir…urgen in die Lehre, trat in den österreichischen Militärdienst als Wundarzt ein und machte die Belagerung von Orsova (Banat) sowie mehrere Gefechte des österreichisch-türkischen Kriegs mit. Später nahm er seine chirurgischen Studien wieder auf und diente wieder als Wundarzt in der Armee. Nach seinem Austritt aus der Armee lebte er in Frankreich, praktizierte dann von 1798 bis 1800 als Arzt in Mähren, anschließend bis 1820 in Ungarn. Rochel beschäftigte sich mit dem Studium der Karpaten, insbesondere der Flora und arbeitete ab 1820 als Verwalter des botanischen Gartens der Pester Universität. Rochel veröffentlichte Naturhistorische Miszellen über den nordwestlichen Karpath in Oberungarn (1821), Plantae Banatus (1828) und Botanische Reise durch das Banat (1838). - Klassische Darstellung des frühen 19. Jahrhunderts der Pflanzenwelt im Banat (heute Teil von Ungarn, Rumänien und Serbien). Enthält neben den botanischen Beschreibungen auch Kapitel zur Geographie.
