The alexandrine is a 12-syllable line with a distinctive rhythmic pattern, which the author thoroughly examines and explores through the lens of Hugo's masterful applications. By delving into the intricate interplay of rhythm, syntax, and poetic devices employed by Hugo, the book unveils a fresh understanding of his poetic techniques and their impact on the aesthetics of French verse. The author's meticulous scrutiny allows us to appreciate the intricate metrical structures that underlie Hugo's most iconic verses, revealing the poet's meticulous craftsmanship and profound understanding of language's musicality. Through an analysis of witty remarks ranging from jokes to wordplay and satire, the author uncovers a common thread: a surprising association of ideas. This surprise is derived from the violation of our logical expectations and often accompanied by laughter. The author categorizes wit into three forms: logical, which results from mental agility and wordplay; alogical, which arises from a deliberate violation of common sense; and paradoxical, a form of wit that presents a clever contradiction. The book delves into the psychology of wit, examining the role of intelligence, spontaneity, and the desire to provoke laughter. The author concludes that wit is a complex and multifaceted phenomenon that enriches our understanding of humor and language. 12mo. 132pp. In a relatively modern binding of quarter-calf & marbled boards, the spine lettered in gilt. Marbled end papers. A little foxing, mainly to late leaves, a clean very good copy. An erotic, anticlerical work by the 18th century rascal Jacques Rochette de la Morlière, also known as the Knight of the Mortuary, who was born in 1719 to an old noble family. The work was first published anonymously in 1747 as "Les campagnes de l'Abbé de T*** ", reissued the following year as "Les lauriers Ecclesiastics. ". This copy is surely of spurious imprint and date. There are many editions [Rose: Register of Erotic Books, pg. 187, citing 8 examples from 1748 - 1882]; most editions also include a second work, "Triomphe des Religieuses ou les Nones Babillardes", but it is not included here. This edition, having 132 pages, is nowhere cited that we can find. This book was scandalous, due to its attack on the Clergy; the author was exiled and imprisoned. See Lopes: "NON. Pamphlets, brûlots et autres textes polémiques. Choix de textes en langue française de la bibliothèque municipale de Besançon. Exposition du 17 Septembre au 22 Octobre 2016" (pg. 58-59).
