Mair was a poet, a journalist, a civil servant, and something of an adventurer. Certa…inly "Through the Mackenzie Basin" is an adventure story as well as an account of the Canadian Government's relations with sub-Arctic Indian tribes. With many vintage photos of Indians, and a folding color map of Indian tribes within the area designated as "Treaty No. 8" in which Mair played an essential role. MacFarlane, an employee of the Hudson's Bay Company, was an ardent collector of cultural and natural history specimens for the Smithsonian Institution. He recruited his Indian neighbors to bring him specimens. See Lande 1332. Very good condition, bound in half black morocco over marbled boards. Light cover wear. 494 pp. b/w halftone plates.
