Ouvrage de référence sur l'uvre d'Auguste Rodin, paru deux ans avant sa mort, avec un commentaire de Gustave Coquiot, critique d'art et un des secrétaires de Rodin. On joint une lettre d'Auguste Rodin à Henry Lapauze, rédigée par son secrétaire René Chéruy avec signature autographe de Rodin, datée du 8.03.1907. Elle est rédigée sur papier à en-tête de son adresse au182 Rue de l'Université (1 bi-folio in-12). Rodin était allé à Strasbourg, alors ville allemande, pour l'exposition d'art français contemporain (2 mars-7 avril). Il séjourne à Strasbourg et Colmar du 1er au 4 mars en compagnie des peintres Charles Cotter et Albert Besnard. La monumentale statue duPenseurfut exposée à l'entrée. Dans cette lettre,il remercie Monsieur Lapauze(1867-1925), homme de lettres et journaliste, conservateur du musée du Petit Palais,pour des invitations que celui-ci lui a fait parvenir, et s'excuse de n'avoir pu se présenter chez lui en raison de son voyage à Strasbourg. La lettre se trouve publiée dans la Correspondance de Rodin, Editions du musée Rodin, 1986, volume II, n° 269, illustration p. 204. Bel exemplaire. Signé par l'illustrateur.

A compact and rich archive of material relating to the activities of French master foundryman and metal caster, Auguste Griffoul (born 1872), the son of Jean-Baptiste Griffoul who cast more than one hundred pieces for Rodin. Auguste opened his own foundry after his father's death and continued w…orking with Rodin and other sculptors. Financial difficulties obliged him to emigrate to America (ca. 1900), where he established a foundry in Newark and cast work for St. Gaudens, J.E. Fraser, and Carl Rungius, among others, as well as producing decoratvie work. His firm went into receivership during the first world war and later materials trace his subsequent work in foundries in the midwest. Mais je suis… toujours à votre disposition pour ce sue vous voudrez» [1899?]. «Demain mercredi j'ai peut-être ma dernière séance avec Falguière car je vais mouler jeudi ou vendredi pour que le fondeur le presse aussitôt. Je travaille un peu sur le déjeuner car mon modèle vient tard» 4 mars 1909. Il remet leur rendez-vous à Meudon: «le froid est si vif, la neige si épaisse et les chemins si mauvais» [2 janvier 1910]. «Je fais des voeux pour votre bonheur et pour votre santé, et je suis ému en pensant à vous, et toujours reconnaissant en tout temps de vos amitiés» [18 avril 1910]. Condoléances. 5 février 1911. Il diffère leur déjeuner: «Je suis encore très grippé et pour me remettre, je vais passer deux ou trois jours à la campagne. Je reviendrai jeudi et j'irai peu après vous rendre réponse au sujet des Carrière» 18 septembre 1911. Fenaille a invité Rodin au château de Montal (Lot): «Je viens vous demander si vous y êtes encore et si je puis vous y aller trouver maintenant sans vous déranger car à la fin de septembre vous revenez je crois?» 1er août 1913. «Je voudrais vous demander un conseil sur une tapisserie que je désire approfondir, et cela me ferait bien plaisir si vous veniez me voir à l'Hôtel Biron» [Début septembre 1913]. Il a reçu son invitation pour le 13 septembre à Montal: «Je viendrai à cette inauguration du Président de la République à votre beau château» [Septembre 1913]. «Merci mon cher ami tout est bien arrangé. Ainsi le matin du 13 je pars avec l'auto de l'hôtel Terminus pour Montal et le lendemain dimanche retour» [15 novembre 1913]. «Je vous remercie des cinquante mille francs que vous déposez dans la banque à mon nom. Vous savez que ceci profitera au public, et ceci est le contrecoup final de vos opérations. C'est bien cher ami pour le public et pour moi» Il regrette de n'avoir pu aller chez Fenaille et voir M. Je reste conjurer le dégât» On joint 2 télégrammes de Rodin à Fenaille; 2 notes autographes de Maurice Fenaille récapitulant ses achats d'oeuvres de Rodin de 1897 à 1909 et en 1913 (dont le versement de 50.000 fr. pour des travaux non livrés dont il fait la liste), et une l.a.s. (minute), 26 mars 1917, à propos d'un marbre qui lui appartient retrouvé au «musée Biron». Plus une l.a.s. de Me Henry Aubépin, acceptant de défendre les droits de Fenaille à l'occasion de la donation Rodin.

La lettre a été di…ctée à son secrétaire Mario Meunier. Belle signature autographe complète de l'artiste « Auguste Rodin ». Lettre du sculpteur à la poétesse Jane Catulle-Mendès qui comptait parmi les amis du sculpteur. La poétesse fut notamment l'une des mécènes de la réalisation et l'installation de la statue de Rodin 'Monument à Balzac'. Lettre concernant un dessin de Rodin qui aimait à dire : « C'est bien simple, les dessins sont la clé de mon œuvre ». Promis à Catulle Mendès, le dessin se trouve à l'exposition Gil Blas et lui sera remis bientôt. Le périodique Gil Blas en 1910 présentait ainsi l'exposition des dessins de Rodin lors de son inauguration (Gil Blas, numéro du 17 octobre 1910) : « Il faut apprendre à regarder les dessins de Rodin. C'est sur le papier de la sculpture même : ils en sont le 1er état, et ils nous enseignent sur le procédé de réalisation du plus grand statuaire de notre temps. Mails il y a plus : ces dessins du maître nous révèlent en même temps les éléments de son inspiration et le sens de son effort ». « […] Il y a bien longtemps que je vous avais promis un dessin. Passionné d'art, il investit beaucoup de son temps et de son argent auprès des musées et des artistes de son temps et plus particulièrement Auguste Rodin, avec qui il entretint une amitié durable. Il lui commanda notamment une série de baigneuses pour orner la piscine intérieure de sa résidence à Neuilly et le buste de sa femme.
