This is the Deluxe Edition, bound in half leather with marbled boards, spine with four raised bands, and gilt titles and toolijng to the spine, marbled endpapers and gilt top edge. Richly illustrated throughout with monochrome photographs of Rodin's work. This copy is clean and uninscribed; a little age tanning to the endpapers but no foxing in the text. Leather is generally well-preserved, with minor wear to the spine and the edges of the front board. An attractive copy . A compact and rich archive of material relating to the activities of French master foundryman and metal caster, Auguste Griffoul (born 1872), the son of Jean-Baptiste Griffoul who cast more than one hundred pieces for Rodin. Auguste opened his own foundry after his father's death and continued working with Rodin and other sculptors. Financial difficulties obliged him to emigrate to America (ca. 1900), where he established a foundry in Newark and cast work for St. Gaudens, J.E. Fraser, and Carl Rungius, among others, as well as producing decoratvie work. His firm went into receivership during the first world war and later materials trace his subsequent work in foundries in the midwest. Il a reçu son invitation pour le 13 septembre à Montal: «Je viendrai à cette inauguration du Président de la République à votre beau château» [Septembre 1913]. «Merci mon cher ami tout est bien arrangé. Ainsi le matin du 13 je pars avec l'auto de l'hôtel Terminus pour Montal et le lendemain dimanche retour» [15 novembre 1913]. «Je vous remercie des cinquante mille francs que vous déposez dans la banque à mon nom. Vous savez que ceci profitera au public, et ceci est le contrecoup final de vos opérations. C'est bien cher ami pour le public et pour moi» Il regrette de n'avoir pu aller chez Fenaille et voir M. Herriot. «Je suis mieux j'ai fait une exposition que vous connaissez en partie qui est belle de souveraine beauté empruntée aux belles tapisseries chefs-d'oeuvre» «J'ai un désastre à l'atelier neige partout. Je reste conjurer le dégât» On joint 2 télégrammes de Rodin à Fenaille; 2 notes autographes de Maurice Fenaille récapitulant ses achats d'oeuvres de Rodin de 1897 à 1909 et en 1913 (dont le versement de 50.000 fr. pour des travaux non livrés dont il fait la liste), et une l.a.s. (minute), 26 mars 1917, à propos d'un marbre qui lui appartient retrouvé au «musée Biron». Plus une l.a.s. de Me Henry Aubépin, acceptant de défendre les droits de Fenaille à l'occasion de la donation Rodin.

Undated 7" x 9" ALS [1/2 page, 16 mo., n.d.] in fine condition: In French - Addressed to 'Mon cher ami' - 'My dear fiend' - asking to be given a few more days "so that I am a little less buried in my problems." He suggests meeting on Thursday afternoon, Boulivard of Italy. "We can get together and talk about our business." Signed 'Amitié de votre' - 'In friendship' / A. Rodin. Condition: Bon. Auguste RODIN - Lettre signée - Exposition dessins - 1910 Auguste Rodin (1840- 1917), sculpteur majeur du XIXe siècle. Un des pères de la sculpture moderne, il laisse une ?uvre hors norme. Lettre signée à Jane Catulle-Mendès*, 7 novembre 1910, 2 pages in-8 à son adresse 182 rue de l'Université. La lettre a été dictée à son secrétaire Mario Meunier. Belle signature autographe complète de l'artiste « Auguste Rodin ». Lettre du sculpteur à la poétesse Jane Catulle-Mendès qui comptait parmi les amis du sculpteur. La poétesse fut notamment l'une des mécènes de la réalisation et l'installation de la statue de Rodin 'Monument à Balzac'. Lettre concernant un dessin de Rodin qui aimait à dire : « C'est bien simple, les dessins sont la clé de mon ?uvre ». Promis à Catulle Mendès, le dessin se trouve à l'exposition Gil Blas et lui sera remis bientôt. Le périodique Gil Blas en 1910 présentait ainsi l'exposition des dessins de Rodin lors de son inauguration (Gil Blas, numéro du 17 octobre 1910) : « Il faut apprendre à regarder les dessins de Rodin. C'est sur le papier de la sculpture même : ils en sont le 1er état, et ils nous enseignent sur le procédé de réalisation du plus grand statuaire de notre temps. Mails il y a plus : ces dessins du maître nous révèlent en même temps les éléments de son inspiration et le sens de son effort ». « [?] Il y a bien longtemps que je vous avais promis un dessin. Vous l'auriez déjà si je n'avais pas cru devoir le confier pendant quelques jours à l'exposition de mes dessins qu'a organisé le Gil Blas. We will do them at the rue de Varenne, when I come back, perhaps sooner than a month and a half. There are difficulties with the marbles, but they are good.".
