What happens during the act of reading is the subject of the branch of literary scholarship known as reader-response theory. Does the text guide the reader? Does the reader operate independently of the text? Questions like these shape the approach of the essays in this book, edited by a scholar known for his groundbreaking work in using reader-response theory as a window into Chicana and Chicano literature. Manuel M. Martín-Rodríguez has overseen several research projects aimed at documenting Chicana and Chicano reading practices and experiences. Here he gathers diverse and passionate accounts of reading drawn from that research. For many, books served as refuges from the sorrows of a childhood marked by violence or parental abandonment. Some of the authors write about growing up in a house full of books. Others found books on the street or came to books via fotonovelas and comic books. Some experienced literature primarily in Spanish; others were not taught Spanish or were even illiterate. Books for many served as refugees from the sorrows of a childhood marked by violence or parental abandonment. And many of the contributors salute the roles of teachers in introducing poetry and stories into their lives. Size: 8vo - over 7¾" - 9¾" tall. Signed by Author.…

33 leaves. 12-1/2 by 13-3/4 inches. An edition of 100 copies, issued with at least two cover designs and typefaces. Poems, printed letterpress with the text set on a linotype. Bound Japanese-style. The paper is handmade from various plant and fiber sources. Six of the leaves have minimalist serigraphs made jointly by Freddy García Azze and Wiskelmis Rodríguez González. Each is titled, signed ("Freddy-Wiskelmis"), and numbered in pencil at the bottom of the sheet. The text block variants are 1a) poems black ink with a sans serif typeface for the poem titles and the initial letters or 1b) poems in green ink with a black-letter typeface used for the poem titles and the initial letters. The cover variants are 2a) the cover title printed in red using a script typeface with the author's name in a linocut and the binding done using thin rope and 2b) the cover title printed from a linocut and the author's name printed using a serif typeface, all in black, and the binding done with coarse jute twine. A comparison of several copies also indicates that there is variation in the positioning of the images, both their placement within the text and their position on the sheet of paper. The poems were selected by Manuel García Verdecia and Gilberto González Seik from throughout Prats's career. Prats's work was banned in Cuba between 1968 and 1987. Add to basketA finely bound and elegant manuscript treatise on Campomanes's Tratado de la regalia de amortizacion, written by Manuel de Zevallos y Mier, a presbyter of the University of Seville, for presentation to the Royal Council of Castile in support of Charles III's suppression of the Jesuits. Campomanes (1723-1802) was minister of the treasury under Charles III and supported the supremacy of the state over the church. His treatise was published in Madrid in 1765 and was written to explain and defend a legal proposal under review by the Council of Castile, which would prevent the church from obtaining excessive land. "Campomanes argued, as others had before him, that since canon law prevented the clergy from selling properties of religious bodies, eventually all property would belong to the church unless a restraint were placed on its acquisition" (Herr, p. 89). These arguments were particularly directed against the Jesuits, whose vast property holdings and assertion of their supremacy over political authorities frequently brought them into conflict with rulers across Europe. The council failed to pass the law, but Campomanes's work proved popular and went through several editions and translations. In April 1767, Charles III expelled the Jesuits from all Spanish territories and confiscated their property. The Jesuits had dominated the University of Seville, and with their expulsion the university had to be substantially restructured. Zevallos y Mier's treatise supports Campomanes's work and reforms. As Campomanes's text provided a justification for the king's actions, it is clear that this manuscript was produced to show the university's loyalty to the new order and support for his policy. Zevallos y Mier has calligraphically signed the manuscript and dated it 11 October 1767. It has not been published. The manuscript was afterwards in the library of Feliciano Ramírez de Arellano, 1st Marqués de la Fuensanta del Valle (1826-1896), and bears his bookplate. A jurist, politician, and historian, he built a substantial library, founded the Sociedad de Bibliófilos Españoles, and published catalogues of rare books and manuscripts relating to the history of Spain. Richard Herr, Rural Change and Royal Finances in Spain at the End of the Old Regime, 2023. Folio (297 x 191 mm), ff. [10], 96. Paper watermarked with two lions supporting a crowned shield with cross above the initials "SP" and numeral 2. Contemporary red morocco for presentation, spine with gilt sceptre devices, gilt arms of Charles III on front cover and papal arms on rear cover, both surrounded by Agnus Dei devices within elaborate and richly gilt frame, green silk ties, four-coloured block-print endpapers, gilt edges.
