Paperback. Condition: new. Paperback. The concept of history evoked through art.How do we understand art? How do we understand history? Most often these two questions are caught up in the discipline of art history or some other academic jargon. But what if instead we approach artworks as a lens for viewing the past? In Working T…hrough the Past the art critic Kjetil Roed suggest that artworks provide not only tools for understanding our own past, but also indicate how art is entangled in the web of collective histories. Roed guides us through a range of examples from both national and international pasts, but also personal backstories. The concept of history evoked through art, he claims, is very different from the impersonal narratives of professional historians; it makes possible strikingly intimate, but fresh, encounters with remnants of what has been. In art we can experience that the past is still present through re-enacted singular events or forgotten dramas retold. Through a piece of clothing from youth, perhaps, or fragments of interiors from a childhood home - or even objects that bring repressed collective memories back into view, and demand our attention. By being more attentive to how art scratches the surface of the standardized narratives of the past, Roed claims, we might be more truthfully connected with it. In the first book to focus on Nordic conceptual art, Norwegian art critic Red argues that artworks are entangled in collective histories. In closely examining conceptual artworks, Red illustrates how works of art can be used to understand the past. the past. Hardcover. Condition: New. In Norwegian and English. Description: 70 pages : colour illustrations ; 28 cm. The book presents 25 of Bjarre's miniature drawings from the period 2010 - 2018. The drawings are printed in full format - and provides an opportunity to approach Bjarre's drawings in a way you rarely experience in art book…s. "(.) the point is not to organize what we know, but to find forms that can regulate and sharpen the awareness of something that transcends us (.)" Kjetil Røed, from his essay "The form of the incomprehensible - about Bjørn Bjarre's solaristics", 2018 "Solaris is a living planet whose surface is covered by an unknown substance that science, in the absence of other concepts, calls the ocean. This ocean-like is in restless transformation in a constant production and destruction of complex forms." - Bjørn Bjarre, from "Solaris and Linge", 2014 Bjørn Bjarre (b. 1966) is a central artist with a number of exhibitions throughout the country. Through his drawings and sculptures, he is one of Norway's most profiled artists. His last exhibitions were at Noplace in 2018 and the Artists' Association in 2017. Kjetil Røed (b. 1973) is the editor of Visual Arts and art critic in Vårt Land. He has written in i.a. Aftenposten, Morgenbladet, Klassekampen and Vinduet.
