This is the story of an Essex farmer's son who was christened into the Church of England, brought up in that faith but educated at a Quaker co-educational boarding school. After commencing professional training with chartered surveyors, land agents and surveyors, he enlisted in the Corps of the Royal Engineers. Following basic training and service in a Field Squadron he was commissioned in the same corps and served in India prior to joining 17 Indian Division in the 14th Army in the Burma Campaign. After demobilisation he spent a few years in the civil engineering industry constructing roads and sewers before joining his father on the family farm. In 1986 he made a return visit to Burma with his wife, son and daughter and another visit in 2002. He continued the family tradition of service to the community as a Borough Councillor in Colchester, as Mayor and latterly as an Honorary Alderman and he continues farming in partnership with his wife and son. These memoirs are a tribute to the men of the Corps and members of the Fourteenth Army for their comradeship and for the privilege of serving with them. Signed by Author(s).
