Uniformly bound in red cloth-covered boards with gilt motif on front panels, gilt lettering on spines. Top edges gilt. 4to. Cloth is faded over spines, with volume II also faded along top edge on front panel; gently rubbed and rounded at corners and spine ends. Fore and lower text block edges a little spotted and toned. Hint of toning on endpapers. First few leaves of volume two have a mild crease, else internally neat, clean, bright and tight. Volume one has a previous owner's name pencilled on the front free endpaper.

Exploring the life of Samuel Johnson, an English poet, essayist, biographer and literary critic. He published 'A Dictionary of the English Language' in 1755, considered the foremost dictionary of the time until the Oxford English Dictionary was published 173 years later. He was a devout Anglican and firmly opposed slavery; his religious writings emphasize the goodness of charity, repentance, marriage and pride. Written by Scottish biographer James Boswell, this work is often described as being the greatest biography ever written in English. Here edited with notes by Robert Roger Ingpen, an Australian graphic designer, illustrator, and writer. In the original red cloth binding. Externally, very smart with light rubbing and minor fading to the extremities. Original unclipped dust wrapper is also smart with light wear and the odd small closed tear to the panel edges.
