Wraps. xii, 148, [4] p. Illustrations. Footnotes. Maps. Bibliography. Biographical Information on author. Butler's Rangers (1777 1784) was a British provincial regiment composed of Loyalists (or "Tories") in the American Revolutionary War, raised by Loyalist John Butler. Most members of the regiment were Loyalists from upstate New York. They fought principally in western New York and Pennsylvania, but ranged as far west as Ohio and Michigan and as far south as Virginia. This work discusses the ambush at Frankstown (south of present day Altoona and west of Hollidaysburg) that occurred early Sunday morning, June 3, 1781. It involved four principal forces that often met on the Pennsylvania frontier. These were the Pennsylvania Rangers and Militia who were primarily responsible for frontier defense, Butler's Rangers and their Iroquoian allies, who were responsible for implementing the British war strategy. The Rangers were not militia. Butler's Rangers were Tory/Loyalists. The Ambush at Frankstown serves as a case study as to what typically happened on the Pennsylvania frontier during the American Revolution. Good. Signed by author. Signed and inscribed on t-p. First edition. First Edition [stated]. Presumed First Printing. Pennebaker, Karen (illustrator).…
