hardcover. Condition: Good. Our good condition books are generally good for reading but not for gifting or collecting. They could have imperfections such as creasing, fanning, inscriptions, margin notes, yellowing, staining on edge or cover or pages, bumps, scuffs, etc etc (sometimes multiple of these). It's a wide category that encompasses anything that isn't almost-new down to anything that is slightly better than poor. We would NOT recommend gifting Good books - these should be considered reading copies. Our books are dispatched from a Yorkshire former cotton mill. We list via barcode/ISBN so please note that the images are stock images and may not be the exact copy you receive, furthermore the details about edition and year might not be accurate as many publishers reuse the same ISBN for multiple editions and as we simply scan a barcode or enter an ISBN we do not check the validity of the edition data when listing. If you're looking for an exact edition please don't order (at least not without checking with us first, although we don't always have time to check). We aim to dispatch prompty, the service used will depend on order value and book size. We can ship to most countries, see our shipping policies. Payment is via Abe only.…

Add to basketCloth. Condition: Fair. First edition. The first edition of this highly influential Victorian travel guide, complete with six monochrome illustrations. The first edition. Scarce. Collated complete, with six full page monochrome illustrations. The work is a hugely important early Victorian travel guide, purporting the feminist and imperialist values of the author and demonstrating a wider perspective of Victorian understanding of African culture and identity. Interestingly, unlike many other female travel writers of the time, rather than writing about British colonies, the work is focused upon French Algeria and its customs, making it an unusual perspective on the travel genre. The work has a strong focus on the difference in treatment of women in both cultures (Algerian and British) with an emphasis on the perceived better standard to which women are held in the UK in contrast to Algeria. In this sense, the work not only acts as a pioneering piece of travel writing, but also an important work of feminist history and literature. A fascinating and important work, complete, but in need of a sympathetic rebind. In the original purple cloth binding with pictorial gilt detail to the front board and spine. Externally sound with bumping to the extremities and the head and tail of the spine resulting in some loss to the cloth. Sunning to the spine. Ink spill to the front board. Marks to the boards. Hinges have failed with text block detached from the boards. Endpapers and frontispiece to the front of the work, and pages 371 and 372 and the endpapers to the rear of the board are still attached to the binding. Ink inscription to front free endpaper. Internally generally firmly bound although strained in places. Pages generally bright and clean with just some marginal age toning to the extremities and the odd spot heavier to the first and last few pages. Fair. Not Stated (illustrator). book.…
