"Like every immingrant institution, the "Kalyna Ukrainian Cooperative" had its roots in the old country and was establishedin response to stimuli emanating from both western Ukraine and Canada. Founded in 1930 by Ukrainian war veterans who had immigrated to Canada during the 1920's, Kalyna represented their response to economic crisis in Canada and political crisis in western Ukraine. Kalyna pursued economic and political goals throughout the 1930's. On the one hand, its founded hoped that Kalyna, which drew on the experience of the remarkably successful western Ukraine cooperative movement, woud address at least some of the economic challenges faced by Ukrainian Canadians during these difficult years. To this end the new cooperative tried to provide consumers with goods and services at cost, afforded local craftsmen an opportunity to sell their wares, and tried to train a cadre of Ukrainian-Canadian cooperators who would be able to establish a Ukrainian cooperative movement all across Canada. At the same time, Kalyna was first and foremost a coopertive booktsore, and as such it had a specifically political task: to distribute and popularize books and periodicals which reflected the 'new' thinking characteristic of interwar Ukrainian integral nationalism."
