This 1748 engraving illustrates the growth and fortifications of ancient Rome from the reign of Servius Tullius (578-535 BC) to its sack by the Gauls in 387 BC. During Servius Tullius' rule, Rome expanded significantly, with the construction of new ramparts, moats, and walls. The enclosed territory was divided into four administrative regions: Suburana, Esquilana, Collina, and Palatina. The engraving was printed in London by T. Osborne, A. Miller, and J. Osborn.1 folding plate. Intriguing layout of ancient Rome as it existed from approximately 578 BC to 387 BC. During the reign of Servius Tullius, the sixth king of Rome, the city experienced considerable growth. Rome was expanded with the construction of a new rampart, moat, and wall. Condition: Good. A 17TH-CENTURY COUNTERFEIT OF A BLADO EDITION4to (238x164 mm). [8], 120 pp. Collation: +4 A-P4. Woodcut emblem of the Archconfraternity on the title page. Contemporary limp vellum, inked title on spine. Giuseppe Arconati Visconti red stamp on the title page. Light foxing and browning, but a very good, genuine copy. This edition is most likely a 17th-century counterfeit of Antonio Blado 1578 Roman edition of the Statutes of the Archconfraternity of the Holy Trinity of Pilgrims and Convalescents. It is unclear why the statutes were reprinted, probably some fifty years later, using the typographical data from Blado edition, whose workshop had ceased operations in the 1590s.Founded by St. Philip Neri, the Confraternity of the Holy Trinity immediately set itself the task of assisting pilgrims who came to Rome for Holy Years and caring for convalescents discharged from hospitals. In 1558, Pope Paul IV granted the Confraternity the church of SS.ma Trinità dei Pellegrini and the adjacent hospice. In 1562, Pope Pius IV favored it with new bulls and promoted it to Archconfraternity. In a city as popular with pilgrims as Rome, there was no shortage of hospitals, but the medicine and infrastructure of the time did not allow for hospital stays beyond the time necessary for the most urgent care. Those who could not afford to convalesce in private facilities therefore found themselves in serious difficulty, if not in danger of falling ill again or dying. The brothers therefore devoted themselves to gathering all sorts of sick and abandoned poor people from the streets and taking them to hospices, which were gradually rented or purchased throughout the city thanks to the abundant alms of simple faithful, princes, and prelates. The Archconfraternity is still active today. Its constitutions first appeared in 1554, while its statutes were first printed by Antonio Blado in 1578, and were confirmed and reprinted in 1821.Apparently, no institution in America holds a copy of either the original 1578 edition or this counterfeit. Outside of Italy, there is just one copy, likely the counterfeit, at the British Library in London, and another at the BNF in Paris.Edit 16, CNCE15728. Book.

First Edition Signed
4to., (7 6/8 x 5 4/8 inches). Woodcut printer's device on title-page, woodcut head-pieces and initials (title-page with small holes not affecting the text). 19th-century marbled paper boards (rubbed). Provenance: with the ink library stamp of the Bibliotheca Albassiana. First edition, issue without the errata leaf at the end, but with an integral blank. Cesar Grolier was the illegitimate son of the celebrated bibliophile Jean Grolier (1479-1565). He resided at the Papal court in Rome, and married a Florentine woman with whom he had two sons. He witnessed the Sack of Rome by the mutinous Italian, German and Spanish armies of Charles V, Holy Roman Emperor, which he describes here, accompanied by a letter from Francis I to Clement VII confirming the League of Cognac, a letter from five cardinals to the Pope criticizing his political decisions, and the text of the Pope's surrender of the 5th of June 1527. As early as 1524, the year after Clement VII became Pope, Francis I of France's conquest of Milan prompted the Pope to change his allegiance from Imperial Spain and to ally himself with other Italian princes (including the Republic of Venice) and France in the January of 1525. This alliance acquired Parma and Piacenza for the Papal States, the rule of Medici over Florence and the free passage of the French troops to Naples. However at the Battle of Pavia in February of 1525 Francis was captured by his bitter enemy Charles V and held captive in Madrid. So Clement re-affirmed his loyalty to Charles, signing an alliance with the viceroy of Naples. Once Francis was freed after the Treaty of Madrid in 1526 Clement changed sides again, and entered into the League of Cognac together with France, Venice, Florence, and Francesco Sforza of Milan. Then he issued an invective against Charles, who in reply declared him a "wolf" instead of a "shepherd", menacing a council convened to discuss the Lutheran question. Meanwhile troops loyal (but unpaid) to Charles, led by Cardinal Pompeo Colonna pillaged Vatican City and sacked Rome on May 6th 1527. Clement was held prisoner in the Castel Sant'Angelo, and was forced to change sides for one last time. On June 6, he surrendered, and agreed to pay a ransom of 400,000 ducati in exchange of his life. Clement conceded Parma, Piacenza, Civitavecchia and Modena to the Holy Roman Empire. In June of 1528 the warring parties signed the Peace of Barcelona. The Papal States regained some cities and Charles V agreed to restore the Medici to power in Florence. And, at last, in1530 Pope Clement VII crowned Charles V as Holy Roman Emperor: the pinnacle of Habsburg power, when all the family's far flung holdings were united under one ruler. Catalogued by Kate Hunter.
